need creative lighting ideas
    #1903998 - 09/11/03 04:23 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

someone that i dont know needs an idea for fruiting chamber lighting in a very cramped cabinet. as of right now all he has for ideas is a lightbulb about 2" from the top of the fruiting chamber, but im worried about heat issues being in a closed area not being watched all the time. if anyone has pics of creative lighting then you should rock em here. thanks

Try little blue and green LED's. They can come in super-bright versions, last practically forever, are water proof, very efficient, and run cool. A florescent light would also work well, and some people use Christmas lights. Any type of light besides red spectrum only, UV, and direct sunlight will work. Also, watch the intensity as too bright of light can be harmful. They don' require much light at all, in fact it is very little.

You can't lose with LED's. I think I am going to get some for my setup and black out the sides, eliminating the use of ambient light, and also eliminating the problem of my mushrooms growing in circles.

Make sure if you get any type of lighting fixture that it is for outdoor use. While you may get away with it without getting shocked or killed, the fixture may be damaged by the high humidity of a terrarium.

Another advantage to LED's, low voltage... Plus, the blue ones look so pretty.  Not to mention a combination of blue and green LED's would create an ideal wavelength pattern for pin formation.

hmmmm..if you get a fluro, dont put it inside the terrarium, even an outdoor light fitting will soon corrode in the high humidity.

if anyone knows where to get cheap LED setups i'd like to know. i was able to find The LED Light, a website that sells LED supplies, but it seems pretty expensive. for example, a single 3-LED cluster costs $15, and requires a 12vdc stepdown transformer for $19.75. however this transformer can be used to power up to 50 LEDs. they also sell dimmer switches that would be good so you don't give too much, or if you'd like to mimic natural light patterns.

another idea i had was for using bundles of cheap optic cable. that way you could invest in one high-power bulb suited to your needs, then channel its light into your setups without heat. advantages: reduced heat, one control, cheap, and flexible (bundles can be sent to nearly anywhere)

what my dog uses is a nightlight, with a 15w bulb. It's not hot enough to overheat the chamber or melt plastic or anything, and provides sufficient light. He covered the inside of the lid with tin foil to distribute the light a bit better. Price is much better than an LED setup...

A black light gives out UV light, which isn't the idea behind giving light to the mushrooms... Mushrooms are most sensitive to blue light, which makes a flurescent light peaking in the blue spectrum ideal.

how well do x-mas lights work? and since i have choices (multi colored and white) which would work best? also, does anyone have pics of how their x-mas light setup has been set up? i have about a 1/2" of space above the lid of my terrarium and i was thinking just toss em on top of the lid. would that work ok?

While my hippie friend was in school he had to grow under his droom room bed. He used soild color rubbermaid tubs with  "tap lights",  the one's they sell on TV (you know?). He just stuck two in each tub. It worked great!
