Boletes & other fungal oddities
    #8929899 -

Boletes are poppin' in the Cascades!  When it rains though I can't imagine how great it will be! Lots of activity in spite of the lack of rain. Here's a bunch of pics from the foray.

lots of this turkey tail imposter lined the trails

a couple sightings of pinesap (Monotropa hypopithys) were noted

I call this one the bird shit fungus

If I am not mistaken these are a galerina.

A gorgeous varnished conk spotted by my fiance. I'm always looking at the ground...

another fungal oddity unknown to me

the lone burned up coral. normally this is the most often seen on our hunts in this area

these cup fungi were the second most seen on this trip

yet another oddball growing on a log near our campsite

and the fourth most frequently encountered mushroom (next only to the conks) was boletus edulis.

...also any recommendations on cooking and drying for future use?

The orange pincushion looking thing is probably a lichen and the oddball is probably a slime mold.

The Galerina might be a Tubaria but I still wouldn't eat it.

I had no idea that species of Monotropa existed, is it rare?

As for the boletes, saute them in butter and then freeze or slice thin and dry in a dehydrator.

You can also freeze them whole and thaw them directly on a bbq grill.

How does freezing effect mushrooms? Do they defrost into mush like herbs and vegetables do?

Freezing is terrorible for mushrooms, they defrost into mush.  You can get away with it with boletes on the bbq apparently for some unknown reason.

Yes, that's what I would have thought. Interesting that boletes are okay to freeze.

nice!

know what the elevation was where you were finding them?

Elevation was actually 4000-4500 feet where we found the boletes. I have confirmed this with the topo maps of the areas we were at.

I got the info from the book Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast by Pojar & Mackinnon.  There are no mushrooms in that book but monotropa uniflora and hypopitys monotropa are listed as "oddballs".  It doesn't say if it is rare but lists its ecology as "in humus in coniferous forests at middle elevations; from SE Alaska and the Queen Charlotte Islands south to California"

Thanks for the preservation/preparation tips on the boletes, Alan Rockefeller!

right on, thanks for the info

Pinesaps seem fairly common round here, I see them a lot in the places I hunt...

your turkey tail impostor is coltricia sp maybe cinnamomea

-I had no idea that species of Monotropa existed, is it rare?
really  i think you so some when you where here , i guess you did not  they are a bit early in the season.Monotropa  hypopitys can have yellow and red stems we have the 2 here , and the other species of the genus monotropa is the white ones call M. uniflora , that one is really rare here .

no one eat the coral  ha , ramaria flava maybe ...

do you think that conk is ganoderma tsugae ?

is really fun to blow  hot air to those  black cup fungi and watch the spore release.
that black slime  grow all around i have found it in Mexico and in Nicaragua .

nice pictures

Thanks Cactu!  It is either ganoderma tsugae or ganoderma oregonense according to Mushrooms Demystified. Oregonense is supposed to have a larger/thicker cap and spores and a darker slightly duller cap. The cap on this specimen looked anything but dull so I would say it is the common variety of tsugae which grows mainly on hemlock but I did not note the actual type of tree it was growing from. The other pictures I have seem to indicate it was fruiting from Pacific Silver Fir and not Hemlock.

Next time I will blow some hot air in the black cup fungi. I know I have a lot of it in me.
