Edible bolete?
    #6044804 - 09/09/06 09:25 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

gasjews.com/shrooms/shroom.jpg

NOTE: I KNOW THE DOMAIN NAME IS OFFENSIVE, I DID IT FOR LAUGHS, ACTUALLY A JEWISH GUY SUGGESTED IT FOR AN OFFENSIVE NAME SO DON'T CRY ABOUT IT.

With that said, can you identify this "magic" mushroom ?  My dad says it is edible, which is more than likely correct, but I'd like a second opinion.  Found in western Iowa, in grass and under pine trees.

If more pics are required, especially of other normal mushrooms of different sizes of this species, I will post them.  Don't worry; request.

Features:

Yellow and "Spongy" under the cap, probably a bolete of some kind.
The older ones that were in grass are slimy and sticky.

I would also like an explanation of how this oddity occured, if it could be provided.

Also, I believe it can be found in Europe and Colorado (and probably other states, obviously) as well.

Could very well be an edible bolete, it looks like something from the suillus genus to me.

The siamese-twin mutation is seen quite often in mushrooms.

Yep, slimy/sticky and growing under pines points towards the Suillus genus.

I am now 99% sure it is an suillus brevipes.

It was found, by the way, on what used to be a Christmas tree plantation, so more than likely this is definitely it.

Thanks for your responses.

On another note, my dad has been hunting mushrooms for much of his life and hasn't seen one like that. This mutation or whatever is really weird, but amusing as well.
