Side by Side Comparison [w/pics]
    #8918020 -

So, recently I became very daunted with contaminations in jars and bags, so I splurged and bought up some pre-made, pre-sterilized jars from mycoluv.

http://www.shop.mycoluv.com/product.sc?categoryId=1&productId=3

The shipping time is very slow (ordered them last wednesday, they just got shipped out today) so yesterday I decided to go all out and search for all the supplies I needed to do it myself. It took the better part of my day, but I managed to pick up a 4qt. pressure cooker, bought up all the vermiculite i could find in town (3 bags. The stuff is becoming scarce! Why?) and a couple boxes of rye flour (since rice flour was impossible to find for cheap).

Ive already PC'd 12 jars with verm/rye flour that ill be running a seperate grow with.

However! This specific thread will be an experiment by which I will take those pre-made jars and run a side-by-side comparison run against jars from a Tek from this website.

I will make every attempt to make this experiment as controlled as possible. I will use the same strains on cube for each jar, same temperature and general growth perameters.

The purpose for this is basically to see if the "special formula" that the pre-made jars use is really worth the money I spent on them. Should be interesting to say the least!

I will be posting updates with pictures as often as possible, so keep checking the thread!

And if anyone has suggestions for my experiment, feel free to mention them here!

Peace, love and hallucinogens!

Vermiculite has shown, in some cases, to be dangerous. But the study was inconclusive as far as I know.

Verm was in fact used as insulation in the past. My old house's walls were filled with it. It was a giant mess when we were renovating. The dust from it was horrible. I'm sure its not good to inhale, as with any kind of dust, although I'm not sure about it being a cancer causing substance. It may very well be, many dusts can be an irritant to the lungs if they become lodged, like asbestos. Asbestos tho, the shape of the fibers is what makes it so bad, they are like little hooks and when inhaled snag and attach themselves to the insides of your lungs, which irritates them, so your body tries to reject and/or cover them, which leads to the cancer :frown:

Nasti stuff. Always best practice when dealing with anykind of dusty material to wear a proper mask!!! Safety FIRST!

i got the reader's digest right here and it says vermiculite.and it's natually-occurring asbestos.

I believe that the vermiculite that actually caused harm was an isolated case, coming from one particular mine.  What ever caused the harm was from the mine and not the vermiculite.  However, once I discovered this factoid, I left of my search for the killer verm and didn't concern myself with this issue further, so I can't cite my source.

Asbestos is magnesium silicate.

Vermiculite is mica which has been heated to the point of expansion.

This conversation doesn't really belong in this thread.

"Special formulas" aside, what you're paying for with pre-sterilized products is the convenience. You're paying for the vendor to handle getting everything ready to go so all you have to do is inject your inoculant.

To really make this experiment more controlled, you should be using an isolated strain or at least a clone. Multispore inoculations can vary a lot, even within the same strain.

Vermiculite forms naturally in caves with asbestos if I remember correctly. But nowadays they test for asbestos, I think. Even still I always hold my breath around vermiculite and move it slowly. Inhaling any mineral dust probably isn't healthy.

Unfortunately all I have to work with is multi-spore. Im aware a clone would make for a far more controlled experiment, but I do what I can with what I got

The jars cost ~$2.50 a piece (granted they are half pints) with everything you need for your a grow.

Not an awful investment if you don't have a PC.

I'm still interested in the results of the 'special ingredients' and if they help fruiting and colinazation.

wow. this thread really got trainwrecked
1. like FooMan said, you're not paying for a "special formula." They're probably not even adding anything special, just verm/brf. Anybody can do that; you're paying for the convenience.
2. There was vermiculite mined in Montana in 1 specific quarry that appeared to be causing cancer. That was many years ago and commercial vermiculite doesn't come from there any more.
Thank you, and please remain seated for the duration of the flight.

Just to get something straight, it doesnt really matter what im 'paying for'. For purposes of the experiment, sterilization is simply a mandatory perameter for the experiment. Although it may be interesting to see if any of those jars actually get a contamination. I have a high error rate! haha.

Although cash output-for-fruit ratio will be examined, I am also broadening my questioning. I really am interested in the overall effect their supposed "formula" on cakes. I will be testing for contamination ratio, colonization speed and completion, fruiting times, weight differences and finally, potency.

We may very well find out that their "forumla" has marked advantages, or we may find that their jars are no different, or worse. Personally, my prediction is that they will be more or less the same, with no marked output change. But hell, I could be wrong!

If your interested in what I am paying for, then you are preaching to the choir. My plan is just to make sure.
