so your saying the president cant change anything, but common people can?

for one thing, if kerry was elected in 2000 (or whenever he ran) i doubt we'd be in iraq right now

I've seen em with Jerry Garcia.  And just like my dead grandmother whom I loved dearly and have seen before, I won't be digging up the grave to see em one last time.

i didn't read the rest of your post.  sounds like your bitter that the 60's revolution didn't happen.  "we all want to change the world" as the beatles said.  and i think the grateful dead completed their mission, its just happening slower than everyone thought it would.  its OUR job to keep doing it, and not giving up.  and maybe the dead know something you don't; and haven't given up

The Grateful Dead with Jerry still in it would never have stood for a political candidate.  They stood for fucking revolution.

Did the Grateful Dead really stand for revolution? I really don't think so.  I think they just stood for having a good time.

I admit Leary_Ban, that you have far more experience with and knowledge about the Grateful Dead.  But I've been under the impression (from books mostly) that the Grateful Dead did not only make it a point to take no political stance, but they tried not to take any stance on social, spiritual or personal issues.  They just wanted everyone to leave all their shit out in the lot, come in and dance and forget about everything else for a while.

Also, I'd be interested to hear how you feel about Ratdog and Phil Lesh and friends.

Join me?

I actually give around 11% of my income before taxes to charitable causes according to the pie chart TurboTax did me this year. So again, I'm not naive or optimistic enough to think everyone will, but tell me... Could we feed everyone in the world who is hungry on 10% of what the American people earn every year?

What BoneMan said.  The Grateful Dead was just about having a good time.  Jerry Garcia was by far the least political of the members and so, being the leader of the Grateful Dead, the band never associated itself with any political party.  But the Grateful Dead doesn't exist any more and also the times are a lot different.

I find it admirable that the remaining members are doing this because McCain cannot be our next president.  You are ignorant if you don't see any significant differences between the two candidates.  If McCain gets elected, three new ultra conservative Supreme Court judges are likely to be appointed during his term.  Women's rights will be on thin ice, this war in Iraq will continue in full force, the economy will likely continue to suffer and we'll have a VP who belongs to a church that is sponsoring a "Convert To Heterosexuality Through Prayer" Weekend and who gets wet over creationism.  I say bravo to Phil, Bob, Mickey and Bill.

I highly doubt Jerry is rolling in his grave over this.

And also regarding your comment about the Grateful Dead standing for revolution.  That is complete bullshit.  If anything, they stood for extreme passivity, which is not necessarily a good thing.  I think you're getting the Grateful Dead culture confused with the punk culture.

When I say 'Revolution" you're looking for the people taking up arms, and I'm asking "what if they threw a war and nobody came." They stood for a revolution in thinking, and if you think it was all about a good time and nothing else, then you might have missed out on a lot.

Have you ever heard Ripple? Throwing Stones? An older one and a newer one, both about Revolution.  Ripple is about how your actions spread subtle changes over great distances and numbers of people- Throwing Stones is later on in their career and paints a picture of a society moving too quickly, about people selling out and losing track of who owns them and tells us "It's all to clear we're on our own..." which means no one is going to fix it for us. We must do it ourselves.

Obama will no more fix what is wrong with this country than laws have fixed the drug problem.  In the end, that is all Obama or any other candidate represents: Laws. More or different, but more laws that people will choose to obey or not.

Until people's priorities change nothing else can.  It's like thinking you can take a bunch of fucked up parts and build something that works really well out of them. That's the revolution the Grateful Dead stood for.

"If the October 13 benefit goes well, The Dead is expected to tour in April and May of 2008."

um... hope he means 09.  And I hope all goes well.  Never seen the dead.  Seen bobby once, phil thrice, rhythm devils, and mickey hart band.  The best outfit of those, by far, was the rhythm devils... so the chance to see those two in action WITH phil completing the rhythm section would be an absolute dream come true.

I don't give a shit that they're supporting Obama.  We live in a different world than we did in 1966.  If I get to go to a show with those four and shake my bones with a head full of something good, I'm a happy man.  Sign me up.

i've heard it out of bobby / phil's mouth over and over. this is THEIR dedication and support for obama, not yours or mine. they simply want people to VOTE, obama or mcaine, doesn't matter to them.

and trust me, jerry would be right there with them

Their music and message influenced a lot of people differently. I'm sorry your personal experience with them has been tainted but some of us aren't too attached to an image or attitude we associate the band with.

im really not interested in saying much in this thread but i will say this
anyone who thinks the grateful dead was ever about standing for "something" has no idea what they are talking about
the dead are doing what they have to do

i have a tape in my car i listen to alot
its from a grateful dead hour from like 93
and it has john barlow talking about his favorite songs, both dead songs and songs that where current back then.
and the topic comes up of saying ""something" about "something"
as is songs like throwing stones. my brother easau.
and others

these songs have clear messages and are not wraped in whimsical nebuouse prose.

china cat
dark star

those really are what world polotics should be about.
but throwing stones HAD to be wrighten, acording to john barlow, so they could be on record.
im sure this is running oon that same vein. i dont wanna see mccain president. but then again i dont want to see obama. the fact wavy gravy is endorsing obama this year too weirds me out to the core.
the dead do know this
there music atracts more attention media and human bodys than any other band in history.
so like kc said
bravo to them for doing what deem nesisary.
i dont exactly agree with it
that is to say i dont exactly disagree

before i go i want to tell you this one little tid bit of info
i phil play at slow foods in sf last week. and when phi came out on stage and took a look at his speakers (one of withch was sporting a deadheads for obama sticker)
he imidietly made "nu uh" jesture with his hands and went to go tell some one to remove the sticker

so theres something to think about

have a grateful day

I'm very familiar with the GD repertoire from all eras.  I think the beauty of their lyrics is, as Robert Hunter pointed out many times, the fact that they are so open to interpretation.  In Ripple, this pebble tossed could be a vote for the better candidate, causing a ripple of liberal politics that could possibly gain momentum.  And maybe 30 years from now that ripple will allow for a Green Party candidate to have a fighting chance against the dems and repubs.

The kids they dance and shake their bones but what do they do to solve these problems we face today?  People have to be realistic.  I like the whole hippie idealism but so far this "dropping out" hasn't achieved a damn thing.  If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
