Its a benefit gig is it not?, they are being payed to play music to raise money for a cause. Not being payed to tell there fans who to vote for? nor does it imply they actually care about the event at all?

and what the fuck does Jerry Garcia being dead have to do with any of it?. No need to drag his name through the muck for the band making a decision you don't agree with.

haha what? It definitely implies that they care about the event, they are the ones who organized it. Its just sad that the dead are political after 40 years not getting wrapped up in this bullshit. And jerry garcia being dead has everything to do with it, he would have never let this nonsense happen. I mean the freaking shows are AFTER the elections.

Damn Leary_Ban why are you so bitter about this?  Sure the grateful dead made it a point to be apolitical but people change, they grow, they mature.  I don't think their decision to support Obama is right or wrong. Clearly Phil Bobby Mickey and Billy aren't the same people they were before Jerry died, but don't be mad at them for changing.  People change over time.  I don't feel that they're telling deadheads who to vote for, I think they see potential for Obama to change this country for the better and they like what they see so they're raising some money for the guy.  But I bet they don't really care who you vote for.

As I said recently the Grateful Dead were smarter than to believe that a change in fucking *administration* was going to change anything.  It used to be about a change in consciousness.  And no, you drug hazed retards that killed the show scene, I don't mean it was about ingesting chemicals to alter your consciousness. It was about creating a microsociety in a parking lot where being a good citizen of the community, a good neighbor, was more important than having the most toys... and working to spread that society beyond the bounds of the parking lot.

Philosophers talk about Nirvana... Deadheads made a model of it.  Imperfect, like any model, but a good enough living blueprint that it drew people like me in and spread the vision to people who hadn't seen it yet.  I was cynical enough to never believe we'd get a lot of people to work for a better society let alone ever *win*, but I was determined that if the vision of a better society failed to ever come to fruition it would not be because I had failed to do *my* part.

The Grateful Dead with Jerry still in it would never have stood for a political candidate.  They stood for fucking revolution. Can't you see that giving a politician like any that are running for office this year is giving up and giving in?

Regardless of how far your head is up Obama's ass, you have to realize that he is a politician with as many double-standards and skeletons in his closet (ironic choice of terms I know) as any candidate that has reached the Senate. Or is Obama the singular politician who has never sold out Peter to buy Paul? Come on.

By endorsing a candidate the remaining members of the Dead have finally completely given up or sold out.  Sadly I have been thinking they sold out for a long time. Maybe its just that buying the latest Dick's Picks at Best Buy is akin to taking a shit on Garcia's headstone to me... but I noticed this shit started right away after he died.

So yeah, my panties are in a fucking knot.  The leaders of the revolution have been signed by the opposition, and the good guys are lining up to buy tickets. Probably through Ticketmaster, too, bastards.

OP, relax, every dead head already knows obama is the better candidate.  they are just using their influence to postively, uh, influence those people who are too stupid to decide for themselves.  its important that we get this planet heading on the right track, so they are doing what they feel they can to help.  its not like they are WRONG.  Obama is the best candidate, so they aren't really making a mistake in my opinion.  and anyway, they will always have a legacy of golden music, nothing can change the past.

They might have strayed, but they were still the dead.  They had a huge following and will again, if they put together a tour.  would you not go to see the dead - Jerry?

Calling Obama the better candidate is like making "Fuck Big Box Stores" signs on posterboard from Wal-Mart. Cause at least that way you'll get the message out. Do you really think a new administration can fix this country? Do people drive SUVs because Bush is in office? Do they buy big screen TVs and fucking Xbox 360s instead of food and medicine for people in the 3rd world because of Republicans or because of fucked up priorities?

I want every one of you who complains about America or Bush or whatever to look in the mirror and tell yourself what you have personally done about it.  I know that a lot of you here are good citizens who give time and money to things like Habitat for Humanity, but I'll bet far more of you don't.  You look to the government as the source of and the solution to every single thing that is wrong. Guess what? Factories wouldn't pour fucktons of CO2 into the air if we wouldn't buy the products the factories made.  Obama or whoever wins will be working on solutions to those problems for years and will never accomplish what me, you and all of us could do TOMORROW. We could all decide tomorrow to car pool, ride a bike, and stop buying any but the most essential products that are not made of environmentally friendly products.

But OH NO, we won't do that.  It takes sacrificing for what you believe in.  And that is what's missing from today's society- we seem to expect that we can do whatever the fuck we want, and that the current President is responsible if we smell something after deciding to shit in the elevator.

The Grateful Dead (not the current incarnation) played music for our recreation and theirs, sure, but they also tried to make the world a bit better than it was when they entered it. As I said I was never naive or optimistic enough to believe it would pay off big, but the Grateful Dead were my co-conspirators in an absurd dream that one day things would be right.

Fuck them for waking up and leaving me here all alone.
