I Give Up. External Harddrive Question

I received a preformated external drive the other day. It works fine on my other XP Computer, but when I plug in into my main computer it recognizes a new device is connected but tries to install an "Ultra Disk Drive."

I'm Stumped. I even made Sure PnP was enabled in BiOS. I tried it both ways. Also Disk Manger does not recognize the drive. The Drive is listed in "Other Devices" in device manger.I thought i'd see if anyone on here as any solutions.

it's odd that XP doesn't recognize it as is, at least generic drive. Both computers should deal with it the same way unless there's something on one that specifically tells it to do something different or one doesn't have the knowledge to understand it. As smart as computers seem to be they can only do what you tell them to do. Only thing I can think of is get the drivers from the CD that came with the drive or get them from the manufacturer's site and install them on the puter that's not recognizing it for what it is.

If you need to get data off it to the "main computer" you can plug into it while it's on the other puter via networking.

Good luck - I hate it when computers aren't cooperative...

1) drivers are not included on the Cd or Website -- it is a PnP device.

2) i am trying to avoid keeping a second computer on. I keep my main computer on all the time and my latpotop which recognizes the drive next to my bed off unless if I am watching something (no tv).

I appreciate the advice though.

Did you let XP install the Ultra Drive? That might get it in a position where windows at least knows it's a hard drive and will read it. Maybe windows needs an update? Probably not the problem, but it's worth double checking...

Wish I could help more. I used to be a huge hardware guy, but that was back in the days of dip switches, long before PnP.

yah, but it doesn't recognize the it either. the OS is rather up to date.

open device manager and watch what it gets installed as on the working computer.  note all the drivers and crap on there.

then when it installs on the problem computer try and see whats all different.  then possibly copy over the missing drivers or w/e.

also after the drive installs on the crappy computer go directly to the windows update website, while the drive is hooked up, sometimes it will list drivers you can download for stuff like that.

Hey, thats not a half bad idea. I think I'll try that later tonight when I have more time. I'll let you know how it goes.
