At least the rain is good for something... record numbers of magic toadstools
September 8, 2008 - dailymail.co.uk

They look like they have sprung up in a fairytale. But these colourful toadstools are more likely to star in a weather report.

Thanks to the recent heavy rain, the red and white spotted fly agaric toadstools have erupted in record size and numbers - and well before their usual October arrival.

Specimens of up to eight inches, twice the usual size, have been found at The Garden House in Buckland Monochorum, Devon.

But as well as being pretty they are poisonous and can cause hallucinations, violent stomach upsets and muscle spasms if eaten. More than ten can be fatal.

Head gardener Matt Bishop said the lashings of rain had also resulted in the early arrival of rhododendrons, magnolias and colchicums. 'The fungi are twice the size as normal and at least a month early. They are a beautiful red colour with spots,' he said.

'After two very wet summers the dazzling seasonal display provided by foliage and berries is going to be pretty spectacular.'

But climate expert Kevin Boot said early flowering could have a 'terrible' knock on effect for insects and birds.

'Most plants will flower when certain conditions are right. They have to have the right amount of light or day length, they also have to have the right temperature.

'On top of that, they have to have the right insects around to pollinate - it's all supposed to be in sync. But if we are going to see longer, wetter summers these insects will be more prone to mould and parasites and diminish in numbers.'

Penny Hammond, head gardener of Saltram House in Plymouth said the wet summer had resulted in lush growth there too.

'There has been incredible growth this season because of the wet weather,' she said.

'We have a Brazilian coral tree which has just bloomed for the first time ever and an acanthus sennii which has done the same.

'It's been fantastic growing conditions but there are dangers too.

'Unless we get a warm, dry Indian summer we could lose a lot of our plants because they haven't had a ripening period and could be too tender when frost hits.'
