Re: Thoughts about the current situation between Russia and Georgia [Re: Madtowntripper]

I'm not worried about Russia making world war 3 (or 4 if that's how you count them) happen. Most notably as Fareed Zarkowi once suggested it doesn't have the demographic might to man many sustained military conflicts, citing their small population and low fertility rate. Putin has clearly stated on multiple occasions that he wants to rebuild the old empire and I doubt he'll progress that much if this is the outcome of an invasion of a country such as Georgia.

I can see where the Russians are coming from, they claim the violence was initiated when the Georgian military launched an attack to re-claim South Ossetia and that they had an obligation to protect Russian citizens in the territory.

And Through sovietification ethnic russians have been emplaced in every country they've occupied, should they go into Estonia because they feel that ethnic russians are persecuted? How bout Ukraine. The true reason is the Soviets, ahem excuse me the Russians dont want a country drifting to Nato on their doorstep, their very actions have pushed every russian sattelite into NATO. Russia has committed a very serious error in judgement, and the jingoistic oligarches will reap what they sew in economic terms when they find Russia to unstable to do business.

Is there a distinct state within Estonia whose population has expressed a strong desire to secede? If not, then it's a different situation to the one in the Caucasus.

Estonia has lots of ethnic russians. Remember the statue riots?

Quote:
"There is quite a convincing amount of evidence pointing to Russian government involvement in fanning the flames of violence during the relocation of the monument," Andres Kasekamp, director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute, told AFP.

"The hand of the Kremlin is quite clear in the events in Tallinn," he said.

"Russian politicians and the state-owned media had for months been making highly inflammatory statements about Estonia, stirring tensions in the build-up to a conflict," he said.

"We can similarly detect the hand of Moscow... when the pro-Kremlin youth group Nashi blockaded the Estonian Embassy in Moscow and attacked the Estonian ambassador," he said.

The renewed accusations of direct Russian involvement in last month's riots came as Russian President Vladimir Putin, hit out at Estonia and Latvia at European Union-Russia summit talks.

The countries who have been under the yoke of the former soviet empire are deftly afraid of being resovieted. When a country like Georgia, is invaded by Russia and then two are split. It sends mixed signals, and Russia has been gripped by a zeitgeist of nationalization, in my opinion their actions are growing more brazen. They are antagonizing the situation and Putin is thumbing his nose at the EU holding his foot on the oil spicket.

A couple of years of lofty oil prices and Russia is grasping the empire back together.

BTW, here is an interesting writeup on Russia in Georgia.

I just heard Medvedev on the radio talking about moving forward with the "Demilitarization of Georgia", followed by several different Georgians and Europeans saying there was nothing about demilitarizing Georgia in any of the agreements signed.

Makes you wonder how far Russia is going to push this before it realizes that foreign invasions by a Capitalist country often have financial repercussions.

The title of that link is misleading. It was Georgian villages in South Ossetia that were torched and not by Georgia

At least that was my understanding

According to every country in the world except Russia, South Ossetia is a province of Georgia.

Only Russia recognizes the independence of S. Ossetia.

The solar eclipse that fell over Russia the week before this Russia/Georgia problem doesn't bode well for what the world is in store for.

Russia ‘stakes it all’ in face-off with US

Now, say experts, Russia would like to lower the temperature but is also unswervingly determined to attenuate a US power that it regards as abusive and anti-Russian, whether it wins any outside support for its cause or not. “It appears that Moscow has decided to stake it all and assume the role of gravedigger for what is in many ways a perverse system of international relations,” according to Fyodor Lukyanov, an independent Russian analyst.

In an analysis published on the liberal news website Gazeta.ru, Lukyanov said Russia had begun an “extremely risky game” in granting formal recognition to South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and outlined several explanations why it did so. Chief among them, he said, was the fact that the Russian leadership, like the majority of Russian society, was “openly shocked at the large-scale and united support” that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili got from the West.

“Moscow truly does not understand how Europe and the US could amicably stand side by side” with a leader Moscow says is guilty of war crimes, and who has “trampled on everything the ‘civilised world’ stands for,” Lukyanov wrote. “In the West’s stance, Russia sees not just double standards but undisguised cynicism beyond the bounds of normal political practice,” he added.
