Now I'm not saying that Iran's efforts are entirely benign, but there is an economic reason for switching to nuclear power.

Really?  Why don't you show us how much nuclear costs versus oil for electricity and compare the reserves of oil and uranium in Iran.  Thank you.

Any moron can burn oil... it takes billions of dollars of infrastructure to produce power from uranium.  Bushehr is estimated to cost around 4 to 6 billion, not counting fuel costs.

But if you're a country flush with cash from oil, it would make sense to invest in nuclear infrastructure while you can. Especially if you can sneak in some weapons development.

Paying billions of dollars for reactors that have a 30 to 40 year life cycle?

Now you are thinking... however, don't limit yourself to bombs.  Iran's ambitions are larger (highly enriched uranium is used to power naval vessels).

Iran actually has problems generating enough electricity. Nuclear is one possible choice, though there have been proposals to allow them to build nuclear power plants using refined uranium imported from Russia. (they declined, surprise surprise!)

Anyway, you generally don't use oil to generate electricity for a grid - it's too valuable. (fuel oil is used occasionally in some power plants, but not as far as I'm aware as the primary fuel). Iran does have natural gas they can, and do, use. I'm not sure how the economics works out for them, since NG is more of a local market than oil, but in the US NG is used for peak loads with nuclear/coal/hydroelectric providing the base power.
Iran does have hydroelectric and coal resources, but nuclear is preferable to either from a quality of life perspective.

There's no question that Iran is engaging in nuclear diplomacy, but the idea that Iran would want nuclear power plants isn't absurd.

Why not? America, France, UK, China etc all do it.

Fuck the dollar cost aspects of oil vs nuclear.  We aught to be thinking from a stand point of sustainability.  That oil is a just short-term approach to very large scale issue.

I can't speak for other countries, but when was the last nuclear power plant built in the US?  It has taken Al Goreda and his global warming crap to convince people that it is a worthwhile pursuit.

France and the UK have limited alternatives with respect to natural resources.  Plus, they already have the infrastructure in place from the days of the cold war.  Same for China in this respect.

Once last thought on Iran (for the night)... they are trying to create ambiguity with their enrichment program.  In doing so, nobody will know if they do or do not have a bomb.  Finally, it is difficult to enrich natural uranium ore to 3% needed for power production, but trivial to enrich 3% to weapons grade for a bomb.  As little as 6% enriched uranium can be used in an implosive device resulting in decent yields.  I have no problem with Iran having nuclear power plants, and not much of a problem with them enriching uranium, but their history of denying inspectors full and open access to the facilities in order to track the uranium changes everything...

> That oil is a just short-term approach to very large scale issue.

As is uranium ore, at least for Iran, considering they have very little of it.
