Remember Iran?
    #8882385 -

After months of pumping up the "Iranian threat," the Bush administration and the main stream media have suddenly dropped the subject. In fact, since the war in Georgia, I don't remember a single major story about Iran, and just earlier this summer I sat down at a family dinner to the subject "what are we going to do about Iran?" (my answer: don't worry, Russia's a much bigger threat - it's all propaganda, anyway).

In fact, there has been a significant recent development on the Iranian front: the Iraqi government is expelling the MeK, an Iranian rebel group long supported by the U.S.
http://africa.reuters.com/world/news/usnL5667185.html
This has been one of the Iranian's main demands for a long time - they claim MeK is a terrorist organization supported by the US.

Why do I bring this up?
To emphasize what I see as the utter failure of the Bush administration's foreign policy. By taking a bellicose stance in the Middle East, Bush gave Russia the green light to do whatever they want - what can we do, with our military tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan? Plus, with secret prisons, torture, and a recent invasion of sovereign nations to our credit, the Russians have the moral authority to get away with it - eastern Europeans may whine, but the Russian government can easily persuade their own people, and enough foreigners to matter, that their actions are morally equivalent to the West. So the Medvedev doctrine can proclaim a "multilateral world", and plenty of people are happy about it.
But beyond this, Washington is now brought to the bargaining table with Tehran - the US is making concessions to a regional power, after years of bellicose rhetoric.

Really, is this a promising start to the "New American Century"?

its funny i thought iran would have been dropped once our NIE said that they halted their nuclear program back in 2003
they just want cheap nuclear energy which is better for the environment, but we dont give a flying fuck about that we care more about our "security"

Except they didn't.  Duh.

Funny, they keep saying they have the right to nuclear weapons and have no real reason to pursue nuclear power since their uranium reserves are miniscule and they have tons of oil.  YOU can be a sucker.  Don't expect the rest of us to be.

Iran says they haven't halted their program.  So they haven't.  Do you have any more questions?

you do realize we are discussing a nuclear program that leads to a nuclear weapon not one that leads to nuclear power right
and yes they are still pursuing nuclear power, not weapons
correct

He did.  They found some.  And I don't care, since it was never my rationale for killing him.  You must feel mighty duped by Clinton, French intelligence, Italian intelligence, Iranian intelligence, Brit intelligence, UN intelligence (oxymoron alert there).  Hello lollipop.

Iran wants to be like N Korea - look unstable and wave your  finger over the button to get concessions from the rest of the world.

That's a bit unfair - N Korea is a real basket-case, but Iran has a lot going for it - educated and smart people, socially some sympathy and friendship for the west, a much more open society than N Korea. Plenty of problems, too - stupid clerics run the country - but it's not N Korea, for sure.

Your global security link claims Iran is 2 years away from the bomb; other estimates are 10 (7) years:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/01/AR2005080101453.html

Anyway, they don't have it, and if they did, so what? Pakistan already has the bomb.
Iran's a problem, sure enough, but there are plenty of others.

In the OP I was really just making fun of the Bush administration for it's Epic Fail on Iran.

The only epic fail on Iran is by Carter.

The difference being a weaponized (deliverable) bomb.  Any moron can smack two blocks of u235 together, but to make it into an effective and transportable weapon is a bit tougher.

Replace nuclear power with nuclear fuel and his point is valid.

If I had tons of oil I wouldn't be wasting it by burning it when I can sell it and make megabucks!

And I suppose you think there are groves and groves of uranium trees just waiting to be plucked by itinerant uranium pickers.

Energy from uranium is very cheap compared to oil.

Now I'm not saying that Iran's efforts are entirely benign, but there is an economic reason for switching to nuclear power.
