I always assume that it either means the guy has killed someone or done a stint in jail/prison.  I'm going to get one eventually.

I just assumed that it referred to the killer crying inside because they had killed another human being for some reason.  Maybe I thought that they were almost saying that they had killed a part of themselves?  I don't know.

I thought it was only prison gangs though, not too much street gangs, although a lot of street gangs go in and out so...

But yea, it means you killed someone in prison, usually as your first act to join the prison gang.
However I have heard that some people in prison tattoo tears to represent the tears they want to shed for the death of a loved one but cant actually cry because of where they are, or something to that degree...

And the reason for the different colors is that they use what ever color is available...

A tattoo with an empty top and a full bottom means that the loved one had been murdered but their killer was murdered by the tattoo wearer.

Killing someone is a badge of honor in gangs, they would never use a tear or something sad to present something they take pride in.

Gangs entertwine tattoos representing a murder into another tattoo, so you have to know what to look for to find it.

theres clearly alot of meanings

but when assosciated with thug culture, it is most commonly used to show that you have killed someone.  easilly verifiable just by listening to a couple songs

Florida prisons are a melting pot of inmates that are mostly from out of state, and there is no information from the Florida DOC GIN that indicates a teardrop tattoo meaning murder. The meaning is always death of a family member (family meaning fellow gangmember) or actual family member. Like Pris said the outline and full teardrop has different meanings.

All California, Chicago, New York and Florida based gangs encrypt murder tattoos into other tattoos.

as I mentioned before, that crap started because of posers
trying to be hard, some musclebound kid that took it in the
