Thoughts about the current situation between Russia and Georgia
    #8834232 -

As im sure many of you are aware there are two regions of what used to be Georgia that have declared their independence and alligance to Moscow, the province of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. As I have read both of these provinces of Georgia are under intense control by the Russian military.

Georgia also claims that Russian forces are heavy within the buffer-zone which is along their shared border.

My question is what is your stance on the states that are now independent regions and occupied by Russia? Do you think the US should have any role in helping Georgia re-secure its country? What do you think will come of this situation?

My apologies if there is already another running discussion about this topic.

I can see where the Russians are coming from, they claim the violence was initiated when the Georgian military launched an attack to re-claim South Ossetia and that they had an obligation to protect Russian citizens in the territory.

The people in Abkhazia and S. Ossetia clearly want independence from Georgia, and have even voted that way in a 2006 referendum. I say, who are we to deny the will of the people?

I agree but it appears the violence was initiated by Georgia. So does that mean you support Russia in backing the independence of the two breakaway states?

I personally think Russia was in the right and the US should support them much like we supported Kosovo when they declared their independence from Serbia. I just know the US doesnt want Russia to gain even more control over critical oil pipelines which run through South Ossetia

The US should just stay out of this situation.

Unfortunately, bad things tend to happen when you tell autocratic countries with despotic rulers that they can feel free to do whatever they want, your own interests be damned.

If you think that Russia just decided to pull back for the hell of it, you're out of your mind.  The fact that American troops were being installed in Southern Georgia gave them pause.  The same reason they didn't attack or occupy the Georgian airport, because they didn't want to have to shoot up American troops to do so.

It makes no sense to tell a tiny country like Georgia to go ahead with democratic reforms, not to worry about what Russia is saying, and then turn your back on them completely when Russia gets a stick up it's ass.

Isolationism hasn't been a viable foreign policy for two hundred years.

You'll have to come up with something better.

I would normally agree but this incident seems like it was provoked by the Georgian military trying to re-claim South Ossetia. Please correct me if I have any of my facts skewed

Well, I think you're right in the acts that precipitated the entire situation.  Georgia was incorrect in sending troops into South Ossetia.  But South Ossetia is not part of Russia either.  And the Russian response was completely disproportionate to what, if anything, they should have done.

If they (Russia) were so worried about this Georgian excursion into S. Ossetia why did they invade all the way to the Georgian capital, a hundred kilometers south of the disputed region?  Why occupy the biggest port in Georgia and begin destroying it's facilities?  Why threaten to do the same to the airport before learning the American military was already there?

I don't believe at all that the Russian motives are pure or non-predatory.  This was just a chance for them to flex their muscles and give second thoughts to any other border countries that are contemplating alliances with the west, be they military or economic.

I'd be willing to bet this whole affair with Georgia gave Poland second thoughts about how it approaches letting the Americans set up our missile shield in their country.

responses like this are why I enjoy reading this forum so much.

I keep a close eye on the international stage more so than domestic politics and it seems like one event after the other that could lead to a domino effect and all out World War 3. Maybe I am just a pessimist but I can see things getting real nasty down the road

If anyone has a link to a good news site that provides accurate information please share. I usually have to sift through the likes of cnn and the bbc network

I am a news grazer.  I don't get my news from any one source.  I'm a big fan of Google News, since it puts 1000 differing interpretations of every story just a click away.

It's irrelevant. That is Russia's backyard and they can do whatever the fuck they please especially when S. Ossetia supports Russian actions.

They invaded Georgia.

Does Georgia support their actions?

I find it hilarious that the normal coterie of people that would be bitching and moaning about imperialistic war-mongers if the United States did this are saying it is absolutely fine and dandy since Russia does it.

And you guys don't even see the double standard...

I think it's bullshit what Russia is doing, but I wouldn't want us to get involved militarily.

I wonder if that is a coincidence?  Anybody else think this?  It probably is just a coincidence.

Speaking softly while carrying the proverbial big stick seems to have served us quite well in this case.
