i hate to be alarmist but some types of rocks can be poisonous, for instance granite gives off radon gas... and heating up the rocks might make it worse.

i used to use rocks though, i was so proud of myself when i thought of it. 

using the stems from your bag works too, they are single use.

I've used a thousand pebbles, I have never had a problem! Now I'll be worrying about exploding rocks.

yeah cause we use big enough rocks to retain water, and we pick them from the river only

actually, you don't really need one anyway.  screens are useful to keep hot ash from coming into your throat with spoons, but a bubbler doesnt need one, the ash just goes into the water.  i use a dry bubbler, and the ash still gets caught in the downpart.  my two nonsense
