Abandoned nest?

About 2 weeks ago a mourning dove built a nest in the tree in my front yard. She has been faithfully sitting there for 2 weeks. I was getting excited to see her hatch a baby or two. But when I left for work this morning the nest was sitting empty. I got home today and still no doves in sight. So I wasn't sure if she ever even layed any eggs. The nest is a little over head high and I couldn't see in. So late this afternoon I took my camera and reached up above it to snap a picture. This is what I found...

Makes me sad to think she abandoned it. But I don't know much about these birds and their nesting habits. I'm assuming shes not coming back. If I don't see her again in a couple days I'm gonna remove the egg and leave the nest for another bird to find and use at a later date.
