Rum Diary....(Spelling Natzi' go Home)
    #880667 - 09/12/02 03:30 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Just a waringm that this was writting while unde a pile of leaves
Ok, I'm half way through, and I like it. This was not my original feeling when I picked it up two weeks ago. - I have to mention I was reading  2 smaller books, a new horror, .(its a clive barker i havent read) and for some strange reason i am reviewing some basic roman/greek mythos. They remind me of school. (I feel it inspires a false sense of disipline, as did my tutualge .)
Revising my book, (which is turning into a horror) lots of necessary. but  dull work/tasks..Oh, and heres a good one ,  the roof was threateing to cave in , in a spot in the front rooms- gah :ooo: - and then a late night romp in the Shoomery - My day is full.
-But I digress.
I am listening to my sweet Peter. (yeah Im a kid still)
Peep this:
So I worship Diana by the light of the moon,
When I pull out my pipe, she screams out a tune.

In Paris my heart sinks when I see the Mona Lisa
She gives me a wink, then shows me the freezer."
-modern love

I have trouble understanding this post. Are you talking about Hunter Thompson's book?

Aww geeze Moe, way to kick a girl when she's down.

Well, I suppose this post is evidence that you are not smarter while smoking hash.
Or at least I'm not.
I shoud lock this, before it descends into madness.
On second thought, maybe some madness is what we all need around here.

.> So what about the Rum Diary?
Oh, yes, I was going to post on this, thanks for the reminder.

I have finished HST Rum Diary, and enjoyed it. As I was trying to say earlier, at first I did not.For I am not accostomed to such a free writing style. Almost 'herky jerky' if you want to be scientific about it  he goes back and forth, like a 'Chained Camera', never cutting away, compelling you to look at something, interesting or not, it is all handed the same way, givien the same amount of attention.

Usually I enjoy more structured reading and history. Even the few graphic novels I read are more linear, and less 'free' But this one took me by surprise.

Having been to Puerto Rico several times, I could see the backdrop of Al's, the small cantina. I was there with Paul as he sped down crooked streets, no lights, no rules, in a rum induced haze. - His flippant proytral of the abduction and alleged gang rape of his friends girlfried was hard to swallow, but then I realized that in a 'Drunks' Mind' : Bad Shit happens, all the time,' And that was they way he handled eveything, from his near imprisonment, to his shaky career. It was a near miss. He seemed glad to wake up in the morning. Thompson wasn't telling this story, it was more like he was relaying one.

I know the  mark of a good novel when I find myself thinking about it during the day. Several times I thought of Paul , teetering on the brink of self destruction, and how in a lesser degree, I am in his shoes. I'd wager, most could emapthize with him. Of Sala, trying to keep it 'Together', talking himself into a lathe, then convincing himself to get off the ledge.  And of Chenault, used and treated so badly, much like the City of San Juan herself. A pitieous creature.

All in all, this is a reccomended read. I must get my hands on F&L and F&L on the Campaign Trail\, if Rum Diary was considered his 'earlier' work.

2 Thumbs up.

Sadly no.
Fear & Loathing is ALWAYS out on loan, and I dont have the moolah to buy books.
I am trying though.
have you read Rum Diary, or anything else for that matter?

I've read pretty much all of his work, and I can honestly say that The Rum Diary is probably his weakest effort, which should let you know just how good the rest of his writing is. Fiction is not really his best medium. He is much better as a journalist, or at least a semi fictional journalist.

Sala and Yeamon both reminded me EXACTLY of actual people I know. They don't know each other though, but they both drink a lot. And I know lots of Chenaults.

Indeed Cyber, I have encountered my fill of Chenaults for this life time.
I'm sick of the 'wounded bird' mentality - as for Yeamon, I think I worked for him once. - OoD
