Depp and Hunter S. Thompson Team Up for a Film..
    #2672822 - 05/13/04 10:55 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Movie hunk Johnny Depp has signed to star in a follow-up to hit film Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. Depp will join Fear and Loathing co-star Benicio Del Toro, Josh Hartnett and Nick Nolte in The Rum Diary - based on another of cult writer Hunter S. Thompson's hit novels. The film, which will reunite Johnny and Benicio on screen for the first time since the 1997 comedy, will also be directed by Puerto Rican-born Del Toro.

Depp currently has two box office hits in release, Pirates of the Caribbean and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

Thompson plans his first visit back to the island in 40 years to act as a consultant on the film once shooting begins in December.
?I didn?t know Johnny Depp could act until he played me,? 66-year-old Thompson said.

If it's 1/5th as good as F&L, then it'll be the second best movie ever

I'm not a movie or actor person and I don't keep up with the latest movies and stuff, but I can say that Depp is 100% pure badass.

Wow, that is awesome news. I haven't read it, is the Rum Diary as drug-fueled as Fear & Loathing?

No it is not drug fueled at all. I would suggest everyone who likes to read pick it up. I am reading it right now. Somehow I doubt it will be received as well as Fear & Loathing. It has a total different vibe to it. The book was started when Dr. Thompson was only 22. It has a line in it that I have been running through my head all day,

"There was an awful suspicion in my mind that I'd finally gone over the hump, and the worst thing about it was I didn't feel tragic at all, but only weary, and sort of comfortably detached."

I do however believe it will be a great movie and can't wait for it's release. I've been watching the rumors about it for some time now.

Depp is also going to be Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's remake...... Gene Wilder is a very tough actor to follow on that one but I have great faith in Depp to preserve Wilder's interpertaion of Wonka.

i thought burton's film was going to be much darker (and apparently truer to the book?) than the 70's version...so why would depp preserve the old feel of wonka's character?

Because Wilder's Wonka was dark..... And what Wilder did with the character was a very great thing..... The book wasn't very dark either, it was a childerns book afterall. Major changes from the book would be slaves to umpa loompa's.

And Depp was quoted commenting on how he thought Wilder's Wonka was a beautiful thing......

I really love the statements Hunter S. Thompson has to make, so I'm really looking forward to it. I think I'll add it to my list of books to read, since it would be nice to then see the movie.

As far as Wilder's Wonka, I thought he did a great job of balancing the dark side with a very colorful and imaginitive Wonderland. It makes the darker side seem that much more creepy. I believe Johnny Depp will be able to pull it off, considering how many times I've seen a so-so movie that he managed to make interesting (like Sleepy Hollow). Nobody I know has the range he does.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Either Thompson is fairly unexposed to Depp or he has no sound judgement of good acting. Depp is one of the highest caliber practicing actors and has been for a long time.

Just look at his filmography
