coir/verm/gypsum having trouble with math
    #8761153 -

Hi all.. I want to mix all my ingredients dry (coir verm gypsum) but I'm having trouble with the dry math.  I have two small bricks of coir (prehydration) to which I've added 10 cups of dry verm.  I'm trying to figure out how much gypsum to add (or how much more verm I should add).  My problem is the volume math - how much volume does 2 bricks of dry coir end up being?  I've only done straight coir before so I don't know how to blend everything together while it's dry before I add the boiling water to pasteurize the mix.  Is 10 cups of verm going to be enough .. and if so does 2 cups of gypsum sound about right?

Hopefully someone is up at this late hour to lend some advice.

Edit:  might be worthy to note that I've had about 3/4 of a bottle of wine by now .. hehe..

2 Bricks will equal close to 18qts which is alot.  Just try one brick.  Mix in up to 10% by volume gypsum to keep it loose and to supply calcium and sulfur to the mycelium.  I normally hydrate the coir then mix in the verm.  Mix the verm and gypsum dry first.  Then add it.  Its easier for me anyway.

Well I'm spawning 4 quarts of WBS PESA so 18qts should be about right considering I want 4 inches of sub for 4 seperate 12qt tubs.  With the verm added the volume should just give me what I need.  So you blend the verm/gypsum dry before mixing it into the expanded coir?  I just started pasteurizing / expanding the coir so in an hour or so I should just dump in the blended verm/gypsum?

18qts total coir so that should be 2 qts verm 1 qt gypsum?

Id go with 2 cause you want it to be 10% the total volume so 18+2=20.  So yea 2 qts. GL:thumbup:

That's 10% verm 5% gypsum by volume more or less right?  so 2qts verm is 10% and 5% gypsum should be 1qt then.. the coir could be a little less than 18qts.  It's supposed to be around 14-16L expanded which is a little less than 15-17 qts.  Sounds like it should add up perfectly.

well your doin 18 qts coir and 2 qts verm so its 20 qts total.  So 2 qts of gypsum should be good.  The coir I usually get says it expands to around 8 or 9.  So if yours doesnt expand as much your right.  Sorry bout that.

No worries .. but going by what RR has said in other posts I've read it seems like the gypsum should only be 5% by volume for subs.. correct me if I'm wrong in this.. but if I'm doing 20qts total (ish) of sub then shouldn't it be 1qt (which is actually a little less than 5% but it's pretty close to 1/20th)  Will adding too much gypsum do negative things to my sub?  I just don't want to go overboard with the additives.. oh and I'll also be adding a couple of filters worth of used coffee grounds for nitrogen.  But that's not much weight.

Edit:  Thanks for all the feedback mate..I really appreciate the input.

Check it out.  I think 5% is for adding it to grains.  Guess you could mix it all dry from that post.  Try it out.  Like he said though dont go over 10%.
