The Large Hadron Colider is a gigantic particle accelerater that would move particles at 99.99% percent the speed of light.  These coliisions will be captured and photographed on a giant expensive camera. The hope is that they can recreate the conditions that started the big bang and find the that atoms or particles that actually turn energy into matter. They are trying to fill in the blanks on a lot of theories we have about the begining of the universe.  Most scientist are confident that a real break through will occur in regards to adavancement in scientific knowledge or what have you.  This is one of the biggest and most expensive scientific expieriments ever created costing billions of dollars and 20 years to build.  It is a huge collabritive efforft front numerous countries and universities.  Its going to be a big jump into the unknown and they are turning in on in about ten days.  Some people think that under these conditions they can create mini black holes which in theories should evaoprate instantly.  But there is a one in a trillion chance that this thing could detroy the earth.

It has the power to create black holes (black holes do not vaporise instantly, whatever the other accelerators are making is not black holes) and strangelet matter, which would both end up destroying the world.

There's more to it than finding out the weight of the higgs boson. The resources spent on it could be used in numerous other projects that would be a benefit for mankind. All this can do is (accidentially?) destroy earth, attach a weight to a particle that no one has proven to exist, or create anti matter.

Are you of the opinion something is going to "happen" in a sense of affecting the entire planet/human population? Just curious.

no.

although from like a mythological perspective or something, its a little scarey that they're building this thing in order to complete the standard model of physics...

i feel this has some resonances with stealing fire from the gods or building a tower to heaven.

but nah, i'm not too worried, there are so many scientists working on it, i doubt they'd really get 3000 smart people to build something that will kill us all without more noise being made about it.

Ohhh jebus. They fire it up at 12AM (EST) tonight.

Thats just turning it on though, right, not colliding the particles?

I wonder when the first collision will take place? I've read "sometime before the end of the year." That tells me nothing. Nothing I say! I need to know when the blackhole will be created, damnit!

It's not down, just really really slow. I can only imagine how many hits they're getting now. Like every scientist in the world has been waiting on this thing. Well, every scientist I know.

I do belive they are starting collions tonight!  They have been testing and fire up different parts of the system, and have had heat up and cool downs. I might be mistaken but I thing the particle accelerator is what they turning on. why wouldn't they start collisions now?

Because they need to bring the particles up to speed first(ahem, accelerate them, with a particle accelerator), and that will probably take some time.

its really gonna take them 4 or 5 months to reach that speed?

LOL, it will be like Half-Life!

Yeah, I seem to remember reading that scientists generally agree that the LHC probably won't destroy the world.

(phew! Thank god those scientists have everything under control and understand statistics, as well as hypothetical new paradigms, so much better then us cannon fodder)

I dunno, ask Seuss or DieCommie or one of the other guys who understands physics. I suck at physics, I'm a biologist.

The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008,[2] the first attempt to circulate beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for September 10,[3] and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008.[4]

I've read about this, thanks for bringing this to my attention again. America was going to build one as well that was going to be much bigger but it got shut down.
