Jerry Garcia Birthday thread
    #8711176 -

August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995

Woulda been 66 today.  I wasnt able to make it to the Birthday Bash in Ohio unfortunately but I'll be spinning dead all day today and playing my guitar.

Pics, show recommendations, stories, memories, whatever.  Lets hear em.

As for me, here's today's show in history:

Grateful Dead Live at The Palace in Auburn Hills, MI (August 1, 1994)

--------------------
Q: We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons... and for one brief moment, you did.
PICARD: When I realized the paradox...
Q: Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you'd never considered. That's the exploration that awaits you...not mapping stars and studying nebulae... but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.

To carry yourself forward and experience myriad things is delusion. That myriad things come forth and experience themselves is awakening. -Dogen Zenji

There are times when you get hit upon
Try hard but you cannot give
Other times you'd gladly part
With what you need to live

Don't waste your breath to save your face
When you have done your best
And even more is asked of you
Fate will decide the rest

Jerry

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I like alot of the 80's stuff cuz i love brents keyboards...the hammond b3 is awesome. Also the band gave jerry a letter in i think it was 81 telling him he was stealing the show so after that year you can really hear the band dynamics. I like how phils bass sounds in the 80's so strong dropping phil bombs left and right...awesome.

Run, run, run for the roses
Sooner it opens, the quicker it closes
Man, oh, man, oh friend of mine
All good things in all good time
All good things in all good time

Thank you Jerry

yeah I'm groovin' to this Rider.  I have a hard time finding good shows from the 80's, this is definitely one of them.  the vocals sound incredible!

This is another good 80's show

I have a real love affair with shows from the first couple years of the 80s.  It's sort of like, the band made it through the 70s totally defining themselves and what they do and by the 1980s its just so freakin' effortless.

80,81, and 82 are full of shows so good and freewheeling its almost frightening.  Thanks for sharing the 80s links-- I have a giant list of bookmarks to top-notch, low-profile shows and I'll be adding the ones I like the sound of.

Also, (not 80s) if you're not smiling and grooving and thinking about someone you love after this, check you pulse:
