, it may surprise you to know that at least half
the cops believe these drug laws are a waste of time, more that
half would like to see the prohibition ended and a few currently
do little to enforce those laws now

Your time frame is a bit off. Think More like 35-45 years ago. However, the response of the middle class using a once 'black' drug, regulated to jazz muscians (other ethnic groups too) was that of softening legislation. Marijuana Used to be treated much more harshly in some states simply becuase the laws were targeted at minorities.

This bill is good news, I hope it helps. I remember a few months after 9/11 smoking with a friends father. He predicted that drug laws would get better over the next decade as the US focused its energy and power abroad.

i see it being legalized within 10 years.  hell more conservatives would rather let me get high than 2 dudes get married.

gumby,  i think that is a pretty good possibility.  if they were to tax it, we (potheads) could literally save the american economy with just getting stoned.  how sick would it be to see that potheads have taken a country out of debt by getting high on their couch?

definitely.  there are more responsible marijuana users today than ever.  if people (like said business men, lawyers, judges, and police) were to rally together and show even your community that you can be an outstanding citizen and still get high on the side, why are we keeping it illegal?  we have a community in arkansas that has made possession absolute last priority.  things like methamphetamine and cocaine are more of a problem, so they are more set on them than potheads.  you can't smoke a joint on the street, but its one less thing you have to worry about in your house.

"It all starts with a positive, forward-thinking attitude"

Seeing news like this makes me happy and gives me hope that we can fully utilize cannabis in this country as a medicine and take advantage of its other virtues more fully i.e( paper, food, clothing, etc, etc.)

This plant grows naturally on planet earth for a reason, lets put it to use!!!

You are correct, and I was wrong. Your assertion was that the current middle class were those that were smoking pot 25-30 years ago. Whereas, I was talking about a shift in drug policy that took place for a prior generation. I'd say more, but its time to get to work.

While I agree that many people, including prominent members of society, indulge in pot-smoking, I still stand by my opinion that the influx of money into the economy if pot were decriminalized/legalized would not be anywhere near the level that alcohol brings in.

probably not but it would be a substantial savings over what's
being spent now in addition to the revenue that would be
generated if the product was taxed, of course the revenue
wouldnt be that great because with decriminalization most
smokers would just grow their own

hell, I'd grow mine, yours and everyone elses if it were legal

Idk...the money saved on not imprisoning and persecuting non violent drug offenders might be pretty substantial.  Idk how much it costs to incarcerate one person but if I remember correctly, it's a fuckload of dolla's.

This thread was a good read. I'm glad to hear Mr. Ron Paul was also supporting the bill.

I don't smoke weed anymore but like most of you, I think its fuckin silly to have this natural plant kept illegal. It could benefit the US in so many ways. Probably in ways we can't even foresee yet. It would be like a big positive chain reaction sweeping across america.

What happened to the stickied thread about this? It had some good info on contacting your state reps and asking them to support the bill as it heads towards a vote.

Whether it passes or fails the very fact that we are engaging in this discussion speaks volumes of how the times are changing and people are waking up to less and less individual freedoms.

if it were to be decriminalized, would my employer still be able to drug test me?  this is the only beef i have with my employer......they fuckin do random drug tests quite often.  and i'm a 10 yr employee in good standing with the company.  i'm the leader of my department, never late, and don't miss a lot of work.  there are a few others like me as well.  why would they risk losing any of us?  it's frustrating!!!

that's my beef too, and really it's not the companies fault, it's
standard insurance requirements when you get over a certain number
of people, test dirty after an accident and you're fired, their
rates go up, after so many terminations they'll get dropped,no one
will have a job until they're covered under workers comp
