Ratdog or Phil and Friends?
    #8626615 -

Which do you prefer. I love them both, but I have to go with Ratdog.  I'm not saying that Bobby is better than Phil, but I don't like Phil's band quite as much as Ratdog. Jackie Green is a great guitarist, but his vocals kind of annoy me.

they're very different. i think phil is alot more "dead" in his approach tot he music, very spontaneous, specey, energetic.

bobby is trying out a new approach, a very jazzy, play it safe and know when to let loose.

i like ratdog more, but i know plenty who prefer phil

I love 'em both the same, though I've seen more Ratdog to be sure.
However, that's probably 'cause he's playing where I am more often!

No need to play favorites, when they all kick ass! :gd_icon:

wish theyd just get together

phil has better jams, bobby of course has a better singing voice. of course many songs are much more authentic with bobby on vocals. phil drops sick bombs though and his improvisation with the friends is superior. i think phil has surrounded himself with better musicians...

i fucking went all the way to see phil in NH (2 hour drive) and when i got there i didn't feel like going to the show.  FUCK i regret leaving early that day

i'm seeing ratdog in August, so i would have seen all 3 in a year, sans mickey of course.  Kreutzmann was amazing, anyway

I hate to play favorites but I gotta say Phil hands down.  He's always pushing the envelope, trying new things.  Whereas Ratdog does pretty much the same thing year after year.  Also I like how Phil gives the other members space to explore creatively and take chances.  But with Ratdog, Bob makes it known that he's the leader and he calls each and every shot.

Phil's current lineup is great.  Most phans would agree, however, that the Q (for quintet) was prime Phil Lesh & Friends.  I'd have to agree.  It consisted of Rob Barraco on keys, John Molo on Drums and Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring both on guitar.

For anyone not familiar with that incarnation of Phil & Friends, try streaming these shows from 9/25, 26 & 27 2003 from Warfield Theater, San Francisco, CA:

9/25/03

9/26/03

9/27/03

But this recent incarnation is great.  I like Jackie Green and the rest of em.  I saw them last fall and a few times this summer and will see them again at 10KLF!

Rob Barrco is great. I rung in 2005 standing about 4 feet away from him at the Tribeca in NYC. He was playing with the Zen Tricksters. I saw him in Jim Thorpe on Thursday, but only was in the show for a few songs in the first set. A friend of mine was kicked out during the set break and I had to follow her.

I really like Mickey Harts Current lineup. Steve Kimock on guitar, George Porter Jr on bass, Jen Durkin on vocals, Walfredo Reyes Jr. on drums, and talking drum master Sikiru Adepoju and Kyle Hollingsworth on Keys. I sold Kimocks niece a sandwich Friday.  =] They wanted PB&J

I haven't seen Phil in a few years, but always enjoy his shows.

Phil. I think I heard Bobby started selling sbd patches once I think? Didn't I? I think some kids were pissed at him over that. Whatever though, he shoulda let them patch in for free. I know it is his property and blah blah etcetra etcetra. So Phil FTW1111111111 :bigblunt:

I don't like Ratdog at all.  Don't like the tenor sax approach, I find the band uninspired.  No offense to those who dig em I just don't get it.

Phil on the other hand, has never failed me.  It was during a Bonnaroo Phil&Friends set that the lightning came down and struck my dancing bones.  Saw the Jackie Greene formation at the Berkeley Greek and they killed it.  Looking forward to seeing them next week in Minnessota  :gd_icon:

So much of what I loved about the dead is present in Phil's jams.  They're loose, chaotic, complex... can't wait

I've never seen Ratdog. I love Phil and Friends. Seen them quite a few times. There's something about Bobby that just doesn't sit quite right for me. He is a great musician, and a legend, but he just doesn't quite jibe with me.
