Need help building a flamethrower
    #8617816 -

I ran across a website a while back describing how to build a simple PVC/brass flamethrower, and decided I would improve upon the idea and build my own.

This it what I have so far.  The orange tank is an old BBQ propane tank.  The yellow sized tank is a fire extinguisher (ironic, eh?), and the green tank is a typical propane torch tank.

The idea is to fill the yellow tank with air up to about 120 or so PSI.  This will pressurize the gasoline tank, creating a gas super soaker of sorts.  The gun is made of brass fittings.  The propane will remain on at all times to keep a small (6" or so) pilot flame lit, and the gasoline flow will be controlled with the large valve on the gun.

Here's my problem...

Due to pressure and lack of oxygen, the flame will not travel back up the tube during operation.  However, when the gasoline tank runs dry, oxygen will be introduced into the line, creating a possible explosion hazard (assuming gasoline fumes still remain in the tank).

However, this may not be a problem.
-If the liquid gas runs out before the compressed air, there will still be compressed air shooting out the gun (preventing flame from traveling upstream).
-If the compressed air runs out before the liquid gas, the liquid gas will prevent the flame from running upstream.

So what do you think....is this too dangerous?  Any ideas?

My friend and i built one similar to that, but much simpler. A tank with a cap on top, and a valve to fill with air on the side. Then a hose going to galvanized pipe with a ball-valve on the end, and a barb fitting on the end of the ball-valve. Our tank was schedule 40 PVC, and we used isopropyl alcohol as fuel, bc gas reacts with PVC. I can draw up some plans if you want.

I wish we still had that thing. :onfire:

I know of a "gathering" they have twice a year where you can rent flame throwers, and torch old cars.
