San Francisco Giants sign Barry Zito!

gammons gets the scoop

Barry Zito is staying in the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants.

Barry Zito has won at least 10 games and pitched at least 200 innings for six consecutive seasons. Only one active pitcher has a longer active streak:
Livan Hernandez 7
Zito 6
Freddy Garcia 6
Mark Buehrle 6

Sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons that the former A's pitcher has agreed to a seven-year contract from the Giants. The $126 million deal averages approximately $18 million per season. Zito will be formally introduced by the Giants this afternoon.

The deal, agreed to late Wednesday night, includes an $18 million option for 2014 that could increase the value to $144 million, an unidentified source told The Associated Press.

Gammons reports that Zito picked the Giants over the Rangers, Mets, Yankees and Mariners. In additon, sources told Gammons that the Yankees never made a formal offer.

Zito is 102-63 in 222 career starts, including a 16-10 mark with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts this year before becoming a free agent.

Didnt expect to see that that would happen. I mean I hope the moneys worth it for him cuz the Giants are going to be terrible for a while, there team is just to old, at about all positions.

No doubt its a better place to pitch than say, Texas.

But thats alot of years and alot of money. Sure, most of those teams suck now. But in *7* years? 2 years ago the Tigers were the worst team in baseball and the AL Central SUCKED. Now its stacked...

I'm just saying, thats alot of money and expectations are going to be through the roof. He could win 20 games and people would still grumble. And that team is no good, even factoring in his arm. I'd be shocked if he won 20.

First 3 years 47-17, ERA around 3.00 (stellar) WHIP 1.18 (stellar)


Last four years 55-46, ERA around 3.86 (good) WHIP 1.30 (very mediocre) and 900 innings

Run support last year 150 runs in 34 starts, almost 4.5 runs. Not too bad at all.

The Giants will be lucky if the next 7 years aproach the last 4. They aint gettin' anywhere near the first 3

I can't imagine them allowing Gagne to be as "valuable" for them as he was for the Red Sox.  Nobody is that stupid.

I don't know if they will have the nads to catch the Cubs but i'd bet American money that they make the playoffs.  The rest of the NL is pretty weak.  Again.

Yeah, no fear of the Brewers here. Still makes me sick from the standpoint that they both went to the central, and the rockies again didn't make a play for an obviously available guy.

At least he didn't go to St Louis

PS He goes 6-2 with a 3.13 ERA

I'm figuring 10 decisions in 14 starts.  He's a big strong boy and Yost will burn his great giant ass out with no regard for next year.  But we're roughly together on percentage.
