Influence of Tort Reforms on Texas Economy
    #8573415 -

Texas became known as the world’s courtroom, when the state’s judicial system was inflicted with frivolous lawsuits and exorbitant jury awards, during the 1980’s. But the state has come a long way, since then, as the State officials and legislators work hard to bring balance and fairness to the Texas judicial system. During the last 20 years, there have been legislative action that have led to a number of reforms in key areas such as asbestos and silica litigation, class-action cases, ‘forum shopping’, joint and several liability, medical malpractice, punitive damages etc.
The Texas business community saw a great amount of success when:
· Texas was awarded the 2004 Governor's Cup award for the largest number of job creation announcements (Site Selection Magazine, 3/05).
· Texas also was selected as the state with the best business climate in the nation by Site Selection Magazine (Site Selection Magazine, 3/05).

There has been a spur in the economic growth due to the tort reforms. The Texas Legislature passed a series of bills to reform the state's civil justice system. These bills addressed: limits on punitive damages, joint and several liability, sanctions for filing frivolous suits, limits on venue shopping and out-of-state filings, modifications to deceptive trade practices and medical malpractice reform. Tort reforms were functional in many successes achieved in the medical community of Texas as well.
In order to fight the cause of Tort Reforms, Mr. Dick Weekley, established a state wide organization called Texans for Lawsuit Reforms (TLR), which aimed at restoring litigation to its traditional and appropriate role in our society. Through the TLR, Mr. Dick Weekley seeks to create a civil justice system that discourages non-meritorious lawsuits or outrageous claims for damages.

Texas is becoming a business shelter.  Not cool by any means.  We have a local company "based" out of Texas (it has 1 worker there maybe), and it's filing for bankruptcy in a Texas court, with a judge they have all but bought off.  Good for the American people?  Tell that to all the thousands that won't be receiving their pensions.
