I saw this littile guy in my garden. There was no gill and when I tried to pick him he broke in half . inside his texture was very crumbly .

Uh that description was horrible. Try reading the second post in the forum about how to identify mushrooms, and then give us an accurate description. When you reply to a message or make a new thread there should be a link right above the text box that says "Put picture(s) in this post." ... Use that.

(EDIT) Damn those large images.. :tongue: I  just now realized that you broke them in half, definatly a puffball of some sort. Either way, I can tell you its not active. Bummer man... keep on searchin =\

Looks like a damn puff ball mushroom. I can see the yellowing in the center (mature specimen). I have tasted young specimens (not active). Very spongy texture and mild flavor. Not my favorite mushroom.

so if it is a puff ball and I taste a tiny bit what should I expect ? can I culture this and grow more ?

You need to verify that the skin of the puffball is not tough or leathery - you should be able to cut it with one of your fingernails. Also, it should not bruise after it is cut in half. If that's the case, then it is an edible puffball. You only want to eat them when the inside is still completely white. Once it starts changing color the inside is changing into spores and the texture and flavor degrade rapidly. You can cut out the discolored area if it is small. As far as flavor, puffballs don't have much. It's sort of like eggplant or tofu in texture and flavor. It will pick up the flavors of whatever it is cooked with, but most people I know who like them prefer to slice it like bread and bread and fry it. They're OK fried in butter with garlic, but what isn't?

so was doing the fingernail test you offered when it bruised orangeish yellow so i thought hmm thats strange because it sat in my fridge broken in half (the last pic is of it broken in half on my sidewalk) for 1 day+ some hours with no bruising or change in color . so i recall reading somehwhere that there is a big differnce between cutting and and breaking/tearing i dont know if it was in the context of mushrooms but i cut it in half and i get the same bruising reaction. so is this a non-edible ? my location is mid atlantic.
