Waking early & running support thread.
    #8533445 -

This thread came about due to a discussion in another one.

WhiskeyClone was the one who sparked the idea. I decided to join in, since I had been wanting to wake early and run for some time now. Then dirtworshiper decided to jump in as well, so I figured this thread would be the place we could discuss success, failure and whatever comes in between.

So on Monday, June 23rd, we all plan on waking earlier than we usually do and going for a jog before going about the rest of our day.

I am really, really looking forward to hearing you guys achieve this, because I know it will fuel my motivation so much more than if I was doing it alone.

I started running about a month ago.  At first its a bitch but now it has become part of my daily life. At first I was running every day but I have been pretty busy the last week or so, so i'm down to 3-4 times a week, still good but I want to get back up to at least 6

I'm losing weight and feel great.  I started running about a mile and a half and can now do 4 miles easily

Stick with it, once you learn to work with the lack of breath you can run for as long as you want.

If you want to shift from a late-night Circadian pattern to an early-morning pattern, you will need to pay attention to your light exposure.  Essentially, modern humans have subverted our natural sleep/wake pattern through the use of artificial lighting.  If you want to return to a more natural pattern, you will need to avoid light exposure after dark, and seek it out in the early morning.  (This includes watching TV and using the computer after dark!) This means:

1.  Turn off the TV and computer no later than 8 p.m.
2.  Leave the curtains/blinds open near your bed so that you are exposed to natural light at sunrise
3.  Use artificial lights very sparingly after 8 p.m.  It helps if you can adjust the brightness (3-way bulbs), or have smaller "mood" lights to provide some illumination during the evening hours.

It will also help to shift your meal schedule so that you consume most of your calories before 2 p.m. each day.  You can accomplish this through a medium-sized breakfast and lunch, followed by a light dinner, or by a large breakfast or lunch, with two light meals.

Though I wouldn't call myself a professional, I am certainly an experienced runner. I take a little bit of pride in the fact that I know how to breath while running to I'm not constantly gasping for air.

My biggest issue will be finding my pace outside. I have always ran on a treadmill, but the motor in it burnt up a couple weeks ago and I don't exactly have $150 to spend on a new one right now.

Plus, if I run outside I don't have to worry about the treadmill being too loud.

I'm planning on being up at 6:30, taking 10 minutes or so to put on clothes and grab some water, then shoot for running 20 minutes, being back here by 7:00 or so. We'll see how it goes. If I make it out of bed and step out the front door, it'll be smooth sailing from there.

I run everyday or nearly everyday and I have to say early on a summer morning is the absolute best time to run.  Do not go back to bed, get out and RUN!  Think of rush that you will get when you are getting close to the end of your run and how great you will feel for the rest of the day.

recently I have started getting in better shape due to Bonnaroo training (lol), taking my dog for more walks, and an extremely active sex life.... oh im also barely even smoking weed.

so I feel better and have way more energy lately.

my only problem is that I am completely flat footed. there is zero arch in my feet and after jogging a mile, even when I was 14 or so, my knees get swollen and ache.

I wonder if there is a way around it.. arch supports dont seem to help all that much.

Maybe try another form of cardio? How about biking?

While I don't really plan on running when I wake up, the tips you gave Veritas might help me out awesomely with waking for work.  Going to try them for a bit and see how it goes, would be awesome if I could get excited to wake up at 5am instead of dragging my ass out of bed all grumpy.

I've been running at night.  I always end up returning to the appt gasping for air and wanting to die...

but that means i accomplished something

A.M. runs are too much for me - i'm on a 9-5 work and 6-9 class schedule so i'll die if i had to wake up earlier.

ello all!  I used to run - but badly my legs would hurt for days after and I would get shin splints, then I discovered this site that slowly helps your tendons and muscles get used to running I'm on week 2 and I feel pretty good.
Also found out that you loose your form quite quickly when u stop running

This has got me thinking about how nice it would be to start each day with a run through the woods by my house. I run sporadically in the evenings, but thus far have been unable to get any sort of habit going. I will think about giving this a shot.

You might as well run Dr. Gonz, you will feel great and this is the best time of the year to start.

Do it!

Even if you don't succeed, if it's something you really want to do, come back here for support and you will eventually make it.

All of us are in the same boat and that's the point of this thread, support so we can all achieve something that will be different and difficult.

New habits are hard to stick with, but I figured it would be easier if we all had someplace to come back to with our thoughts and stories.

I can't imagine running right after lifting.  I do kettle bells in the evening and when I am done with that, I am DONE.  No way could I run.  When I run in the morning it seems to have no impact on my kettle bell workout late in the day.

After getting up early for a few days it is no big deal. At a certain point you may get to where you look forward to getting up and doing your run. I do.  :smile2:
