What languages do you speak?  How did you learn them?

when I was 2-3 I lived a couple houses down from a chinese
restaurant, my brother and I would take off and head over there
and eat anything we could get our hands on, in the process we
also learned a little cantonese, the family that owned the place
absolutely loved us, we had run of the restaurant, we were well
behaved while we were there... unfortunately we didnt have a
large chinese population in atlanta back then so keeping up with
it was difficult at best

since those days I've learned a bit of Tsalagi, Russian, Arabic,
Spanish, German, French and Japanese, not much of any of them
but when I'm in a situation where I'm forced to speak only those
languages I pick them back up pretty fast, how I've learned was
simply by forcing people I knew to teach me what they could

I only speak English fluently, but I've learned some Armenian and that's because I have a few Armenian friends. I'd like to learn Spanish and maybe Japanese.

I speak English. My American isn't very good.. I'm not up to par on bastardizing words,  using the wrong letters (or missing out letters) and pronouncing shit wrong.

I did French and German at school, but I suck at both. I did Japanese for a bit at college but dropped it because it was hard.

I would like to speak Spanish though.. thats a straight up gangstaa language :smirk:.

Language is not static, you know. It evolves along with humanity. Don't hate and be all high and mighty about it.

English, and I can understand French somewhat, because of the amount of French we're exposed to in this country, even in Alberta.

I agree that language is inadequate, but when used to its full extent (correctly) it can be pretty damn impressive when it comes to transcribing the intangible.

The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxely, is one such example.

The degeneration of language is due to laziness and stupidity (in some regards)... its not like people wake up and think of a 'experience' which needs describing and therefore invent a new word, they just bastardize our current language to express themselves. Adaptation is a good thing, but it only works on a small scale (unless its integrated into the proper language). You can go to one ghetto and talk about bare beans and snow shotties and everyone will know what you're on about.. go somewhere else and they won't have a clue.

The reason there are standards for language is so that ideas can be communicated globally, with ease.

Maybe English wasn't the best choice of language, but its here now .

Spanish has been kickin my ass for the last couple years.  But I've been stickin with it and I'm finally starting to understand enough that the Mexicans on the jobsite can't talk shit right in front of me anymore. I still can't hold a decent conversation though.  My brain still works in English and by the time I've translated the last phrase I've missed the next one.  But I know enough words that I can make myself understood when I speak.

Still, its frustrating.  I can memorize hours of poetry (in English, of course) without any trouble but I can't think quick enough to keep up in Spanish.  WTF!

Language is the mechanism for cultural evolution of consciousness in my opinion.  We can define complex, intangible thoughts with one syllable.

When you think about it, we're not that smarter than monkeys, except for we can communicate precise thoughts to each other through language.  Who knows what they could do if they had vocal chords?

Ich kann deutsch. I speak a little French and Spanish too. I learned them by making friends with some Germans and eventually hopping over the pond to visit them. I've taken a few classes in college since then.

I once heard that the most influential invention in mankinds history was the printing press.  The ability to share information on a mass scale made all the difference in the long run.  It makes sense when you think about it.  And it all comes back to the spoken word and the transfer of complex ideas through language.

I speak english fluently. I can get along in German and Spanish, but I cant speak either of them like I used to. Also I used to be able to understand Catalan, but alas no more. And ofcourse Im starting to learn the bare bones if Korean and Chinese.
Also for the last 4 years Ive always had Japanese roommates and I worked a semester in a Japanese grocery store, yet its incredible how little Japanese Ive picked up and how quickly I can forget it.
And my girlfriend of 1 year is Korean and spent 4 years in China majoring in Mandarine and Chinese culture, and now she is forced to be my teacher.
