Languages!
    #8515527 -

What languages do you speak?  How did you learn them?

I am a huge fan of the English language and suddenly I'm very excited to explore other languages.

I've decided to learn French on my own.  I live in a bilingual country (not to mention a bilingual neighborhood in a bilingual province) but I always hated French class in school.  It seemed to be a tedious diversion and I never really considered it feasible to learn another language without living with somebody who speaks it.  But now I know I can do it, and I love learning some every day.

The most amazing part is just realizing that people who speak a different language are not fundamentally different at all, they just learned different sounds to communicate than I did.  Sounds obvious, but I really feel more of a connection to people everywhere.

Who else has taken on another language like this?

I've been using Rosetta Stone, which is great, but recently I discovered an even better source, and it's free.

It's a website called www.lingq.com (pronounced 'link').  You make an account, and study assignments (which are all examples of dialogue), and you can click on any particular word in the assignment to add it ("lingq" it) to your "to learn" list.  Then you can run through online flash cards of those words, and enter your own notes about the applications of each one.  It keeps track of your progress.

If you are willing to pay a small monthly fee, you get access to a personal tutor to ask questions.

I speak pretty decent French and some gutter Spanish.

And absolutely flawless and exquisitely eloquent English.

If you aren't morally conscious, almost every file-sharing website I've seen has Rosetta Stone software on there.

JU is the official Shroomery Scrabble Expert.

He's got the badge and everything.

You'd have to play him for it.

I will remove him from the list and put you in there instead!

And I am absolutely positive that I could beat the both of you.

Maybe at once.

That might be pushing it though.

Where is this list that you speak of?  If you've ever watched a SOWPODS game w/o knowing any spanish it's fucked.

Honestly, you cannot beat Trep.
I don't think you could beat me either, but no way you'd beat Trep, I haven't beat him in a long time.

I taught him everything he knows though.

I used to live next to some Mexicans when I had my apartment.  We used to drink beer with them all the time and smoke out with them.  We couldn't speak a word of spanish and the only english word they could say was cocaine .  They would call my roommate poncho and me villa.  Ha ha I miss drinking with them it was always a trip.
