I made popcorn jars!

So I bought some popcorn, boiled it for 10 minutes, let it set over night, then the next day i boiled it once more, rinsed with cold water, and strained. I made 4 quart jars with a 1/2 inch hole in the lid, covered with tyvek, which was from the last envelope at the post office today!, and sterilized the jars at 15 psi for one hour. I then let the jars cool until they were only slightly warm, opened the lid under sterile(sterile enough) conditions and scraped in some spores I got from P.Menace here on the forums. Im extremely worried to see how many contaminants these 4 jars will give way to, but Im having fun and thats what matters so far.

Also, I decided to use my night stand as an incubation chamber. So far the temperature is 72, but I just set it up and Im waiting for the reptile heat pad to warm it up. i also have 8 jalf-pint rice jars in there, as well.

The jars should have been cool to the touch or you should have just waited overnight before inoculating. If the spores don't germinate at all, I would bet this is the reason. Good luck. :thumbup:

This is not popcorn its corn :P popcorn is after you heat it and it make a "pop" and became this white shit ^^

Slightly warm to the touch for you could have been well over 100 degrees. Next time wait overnight. Poor little spores......

also you filled the jars a bit too much, its going to be hard to shake it and redistribute with little spave in the jars.

next time fill it 2/3rds of what you have in there now.

Don't worry- as long as you used aseptic technique, you'll be fine if you need to re-inoculate. Always give a 24 hour cool-down time to insure safety for the spores. It's one day lost to cooling versus a week waiting for jars that won't germinate to find out you have to start over or at least be delayed. "Measure nine times, cut once."

I've used corn (cracked and popcorn) with good results as spawn. The cracked corn I've also used a a straight substrate for oysters (which did fine). Popcorn is a wonderful spawn material as it shakes very easily and colonizes fairly quickly (due to the difference in structure versus something more compact like WBS or rye). The major benefit is the flow properties for pouring into new jars as spawn- very even flow because of shape, etc. Makes it easy to keep an even amount of spawn going to each new jar.

If you're going to allow 100% colonization without shaking, that fill level is fine. (I do that with most jars that I'm going to use for spawning to other jars or substrate at a later date.) If you're looking to shake it to speed colonization, I'd recommend only 1/2 to 3/4 full next time.

well...
no colonization as of right now.
so i don't know if the spores even took.
=( maybe the warmth was too hot.

but i'm waiting patiently as always.
i'll post immediately if they show any signs, yo.

alrighty, update.
i can now see slight colonization in my popcorn jars.
one of them, however, has a very small spot of green mold, which is disappointing, but i can get over it.
sorry, but i'm busy and gotta go. so what do i do with the contaminated quart jar?
get rid of it all together, or dump it, sterilize it, etc?

i love these forums more and more every day!

Sterilize it and dump it. Trich is nasty about getting all over you and being carried back into your grow area.

yeah the update is:
contamination nation.
every one of them.
this saddens me, but i'll get over it.
i cooked them improperly, most likely.

boiled for 10 minutes, let sit about 18 hours, boiled again, loaded jars, PCed one hour at 15psi.
then i OPENED the lid and SCRAPED some spores in.
and this was my mistake, i believe.
so its time to learn how to make syringes, eh?

sorry i couldn't give you any positive news to follow on. i would still say try it out, just don't be stupid about it like i was, yo.

I'm willing to wager that taking the lid off completely had something to do with those contaminations.
Make a syringe, it's easy... I use the lazy bastard's tek
Plus from what i've learned to be true in my experiences, you'll see colonization initialize quicker with syringes.

Also, "Sterile enough" doesn't sound convincing... Overkill is the idea, make your work area cleaner than a Medical Research Lab.

How'd your Rice jars (I'm assuming BRF) turn out?

I'm gonna try this "pop corn" method, looks interesting.

Hey don't worry you'll be fine if you drained them right and there is no water spots, if there is the mycelium might not grow, and if ti dose it will only be in the dry spots.
Ive just started doing corn.
instead of keeping them in your room, try this with 1 of them this is what i do with mine i leave the tops loose
then i put them in a bucket and put a shirt over them then close the bucket with the bucket top i drilled a few holes in the top and Ive noticed the mycelium spreads like crazy everyday my jars are 50% colonized and then i shake them every other day
