I'm Going to The US :) NY NY here i come

Well a good friend and i plus his Gf and mine are heading for New York in the next couple of months and can't wait.

but would like to get some idea of what are the top 10 things you have to see or do while you are there.

it's his B-day and my Girls B-bay the day after and thats the reason for the trip.

If you are a Beatles fan, go check out Strawberry Fields in Central Park, Also very close by (across the street from the park), is John Lennon's House.
Then go get a hot dog from the street vendors around the park. Most of them are pretty good from what I remember.
Times Square is also a cool place to check out.
I never really went to any other places that would be worthy of a visit but there is a good start for you.
Oh yeah, The Statue of Liberty, Twin Towers Site, and the Empire State Building is pretty cool too.
I dont know if its still there but when I went to the Empire State Building, There was A Guinness Book Of World Records Museum that was pretty cool too.

AVOID TOURIST TRAPS. Unless you want to deal with a bunch of fat suburban mommies and their abominable children. No Times Square (It's all chain stores anyway), no big statue, and definitely no WTC (too depressing)

Go to off-broadway shows. Avoid large broadway productions. You can really see something original if you just pick of the reviews in the New York Times and dig for something a little off-color.

I like Chinatown a lot, especially if you're in the market for some jewelery. The food is awesome there. Also I really dug hanging out in Queens and Brooklyn. There's some great street art (sanctioned and unsanctioned) and the people are pretty chill. Greenwich village is alright, the one thing i remember from that place is all the stores that catered to tiny breeds of dogs.

MOMA (museum of modern art) and the Guggenheim are both awesome. So is the Natural History Museum, if you're into that sort of stuff.

And of course you can't miss Alex Grey's gallery, the Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors. I would give anything to go see that. Anything. You can't pass up an opportunity to go there.

Edit: If you're at a loss of what to do, go to Central Park and hang out. There's always something going on and it's beautiful. One of the obelisks of Cleopatra is on permanent display.

Awesome ideas so far. i like this because the toyr books you buy don't tell you what people who live there can.
