Plz ID, Florida Panhandle

Hi I picked this in the afternoon in the NW Panhandle of Florida. About 3 inches wide, 4 inches high with stem. The stem has a thin ring around the middle of it and feels sorta hollow when you lightly squeeze it. The cap has brownish spots scattered on it and the gills are a purplish brownish/red color. The stem and cap smell strongly of almonds, and maybe a bit oily.
The spore print is a brownish red color. The cap seams to bruise the same color as the rest of the cap. The weather today was sunny and at 85F. Is it a type of Agaricus? Maybe Agaricus arvensis? Here are the pics.

Its Agaricus for sure, and the almond smell is a good indication that it is probably one of the edible species.

Clearer macro shots are probably needed to get it to species. Use a camera that has macro mode (the little flower icon) when taking closeups of the gills and stem.

yes i think is and agaricus make a spore print to diferentiate from sthropharia .
how is the odor , if smell bad as iodyne or bleach , and staint yellow is not edible if not maybe is edible.

I dont think my camera has a macro mode ;( But I did just buy a HP 8megapixel camera off the itnernet so hopefully it has it. I did try to get some better pics of the gills today after it sat on the paper for the spore print for about 20 hours. The gills did get a darker brown but It could be because I stored it on top of my frig and it got a little soggy :frown: Want do that again. Here are the pics I took of the gills hope they help some and thanks.

The odor smells good, makes me hungry actually. No bleach or iodine smell just a strong oily almond smell. Here are a couple of pics of the spore print, it did get a bit soggy but you can see it pretty good. Does the spore print getting soggy effect the spores that fell on the paper because I was going to fold this up and put it in a ziploc bag just in case I ever want to tinker with it for some odd reason.? Is it safe to eat the mushroom? I have ate a agaricus before and it was very yummy with some butter on it :smile:

I think getting the spores wet would contaminate them, but it still may be possible to get a culture with agar.

I don't know of any toxic almond smelling Agaricus, so I guess its safe to eat. But it would be safer if you could find the exact species name.

Your new camera will probably have a GREAT macro mode.

yes dry the spores and then store then .

i think you are righ about agaricus arvensis is the ones that describe best this specimen in my way of thinking too. almond odor the cap yelow color ,and bruises ,etc.
cap colors (pale yellow to whitish, often with pressed-down fibers), its sweetish smell, and its "cogwheeled" ring. The cap will often bruise yellow if rubbed, and the flesh will sometimes turn yellowish on exposure to air--but the flesh in the base of the stem is not yellow, which helps distinguish it from other species. However, there are at least two genetically, biologically, and morphologically distinct species passing as "Agaricus arvensis"; http://www.mushroomexpert.com/agaricus_arvensis.html

i would eat then and save the print. for someone really up to the challange to produce agaricus .

MMMMM, WOW that was delicious! Thanks for helping me confirm the ID Alan Rockefeller and Cactu :smile: I am going to try to cultivate these as soon as soon as I get my equipment ready, I got my sporeprint folded up and sitting in a baggy until the. They are so damn tasty :;) They do put out a lot of oil when you cook them, I wonder if there is something you can do with all that excess juice???  Thanks again guys!

Never ever ever have I consumed a wild Agaricus mushroom from the state of Florida. And I would not really recommend to anyone to eat from this genus unless you really know how to identify with relative certainty (with mushrooms in hand). And have a good deal of experience and the correct literature to identify the ones that grow in Florida (and if that excists it is most likely outdated by seventy something years and the majority of the binomial names have changed). That is just me. I am overly cautious with Florida Agaricus.

There are a minimum of 35 seperate species of Agaricus deposited at the U of F Mycological Herbarium, all found in Florida. And you do not see all of those species in photographs and easily obtainable books/papers as far as I know. Murrill probably described the majority of the Agaricus species that only grow in Florida (this was roughly back in the 1920's).

There is no chance I could identify your mushrooms from these blurry photos. You did not mention the exact habitat. You said that the spore print was reddish brown which does not match up but you obviously did not see the color as it really is (brown). Most Agaricus are edible, but some are poisonous (but not really deadly). Many of the edible species will even make people sick (allergic reactions are quite common from the genus Agaricus). And I recall reading somewhere (not sure what book) that a almond or even pleasant aroma is absolutely no way to safely judge if the Agaricus is edible or poison. I believe the same goes for if the Agaricus stains or bruises the color yellow. Often (this genus is split up into maybe several different Sections totally well over 200 seperate species in North America alone) a solid ID sometimes requires a chemical reaction test on the flesh of the fresh mushroom with a solution of KOH or a similar chemical. So (personally) with the blurry photos, vague description, and incorrect spore print color, there is no way I would recommend you eating those. And one step further, it is highly recommended not to really eat a full meal of a wild edible mushrooms that you have never experimented with before; only a small sample should be tested first to see if any allergic reactions occur in a lesser degree then what someone could experience after eating a full meal of them. This is just my recommended approach with Agaricus mushrooms.

An example: Agaricus augustus (maybe the easiest Agaricus to identify) is easily the most flavorful and excellent wild mushroom I have eaten before. It smells great, very strong sweet almond odor. But a good portion of the folks who try this otherwise choice edible get sick from them. So, my advice would be more careful. Just because a Agaricus meal is delicious does not mean a person can't get sick.

Ask Bill Petty. I would be interested to know what his response might be. He is not a Phd type Mycologist, so he would probably respond to your ID request and maybe within less then a day. I have corrosponded with him a number times and he seems pretty darn sharp with that states wild mushrooms.
