Oysters from spores?
    #816458 -

Hey all...
I was just wondering what the best / easiest way of growing oyster mushrooms from spores is? The reason I ask is I am getting some pink oyster spores soon through a trade. Should I streak onto agar? Or make a syringe? or what? Also what substrates?

The easiest would probably be(if the spores are clean) to inoculate rye directly with spores, then spawn straw with it.

Why do you say that anno?
I was going to use a syringe to innoculate my jars??
Surely it works the same as most strains, direct spore transferring is too open to contamination isn`t it?

One interesting method that works with oysters is to make a spore solution. Get a steralized hand spray bottle with a course spray tip, dH2O and oyster spores.....and then you can literally spray the spores onto substrate. Works very well for getting oysters to spawn straw and newspaper.

DERRAYLD, I think what Anno meant was to directly innoculate with spore/spore solution, not excluding the use of a spore syringe.

I've grown out the mycelium on newspaper.....but unfortunately had to travel to Europe and never saw the fruits of my labors. However, you'll find that cultivating oysters on pulp is quite well documented -- just look in GGMM!

Psychonaut,
How much of a spore print shoud I use per litre of water if I use the spray technique? Or, could I make a spore syringe as per cubensis method, and innoculate a jar of paper shreds or some other substrate?

Use lots of spores for a spore spray. Aim for a spore to water density ratio that's better than you'd use for a syringe. This is not really a problem for oysters given the number of spores they release!

A few notes on newspaper:

- Don't use colored sections of the paper!
- If possible, find out if your newspaper is on soy bean based inks (most are these days, and even non soy based newspaper has been proven to be not very toxic, and it's debatable if the toxins even end up in the mushrooms)
- pasteurize it in a covered pot of boiling water. Be warned that the ink can be a messy affair. Use decent stainless steel pots if you have them -- they're easier to clean.
- spray a sheet of newspaper with spore spray until wet. Add another layer of paper on top. Repeat. When you have enough sheets to make a brick or roll of paper, do so and place in a plastic bag. Pierce holes in the bag and sit back and wait.

Guitarguy: did you pasteurize your coffee grounds before innoculation?

Newsprint/Ink [Re: psyconaut]

This is of interest to me not just for raising mushrooms, but for raising earthworms too.Between the 2,I'd like to be able to recycle all our household waste paper.

A friend said a recent issue of Mother Earth News (she thinks) had an article saying pretty much ALL inks used these days are non toxic.I'm trying to track it down....

As far as mushrooms accumulating toxins,I think heavy metals are one of the few things that are a definite concern.I know lead was used in inks at some point.

Guess this post raises more questions than answers....
