Talkin About Fish N Beer
    #8260596 -

So, the other day at work I get into a conversation about fishing with one of my co-workers. He's a simple down to earth fella and the conversation was mostly about fishing, drinking beer, and being hungover at work on that particular day.

We laughed a good bit and he even invited me to go fishing with him next weekend, but I turned him down because that's just not my cup of tea.

But after the whole talk, I had somewhat of a wtf moment. Why was I so interested in listening to him talk about his redneck weekend? I'm the complete antithesis of your stereotypical John Deere man.

So I'm wondering, just how much value does subject matter hold in a conversation? If another redneck wanted to talk to me about fish n beer, there's not a chance in hell I would give him the time of day. But coming from a guy I knew fairly well, I was interested for some reason.

The topic of conversation was irrelevant, because the important activity was connecting.  With someone else, you would probably be less interested in connecting, and therefore not tolerate the topic.

Wow, we're judgmental aren't we? I would have went fishing with the guy. I love fishing, and I like to drink beer. Not a damn thing wrong there. Examine your cultural prejudices and you will understand this issue better.

So, today I'm walking out of the Post Office and I see a lady wearing a T shirt with New York City on the front.

So, I say to her in my best Pace Picante Texas Accent "New York City!".  Mind you, I didn't know this lady from the pebble on the ground.

So, she ignores my comment but immediately starts describing how some guy stole her identity and knew her bank PIN number and she ended up talking to him on the phone and she asked him how did you get my PIN and he tells her "none of your business".

haha,

you remind me of a bottletree lunar.

you're always very random. maybe even profound, I'm not sure yet on that one :sun:

i'm not judging the guy at all.

i'm asking if subject matter holds any relevance to conversation.

The term redneck is not a culturally prejudiced term? Your prejudice, then, is very ingrained. The issue is why you connected with a person you bore cultural prejudice against so it is very relevant to talk of prejudice.

Hue.

Half of my family is inbred and lives in rural mississippi.

I'm the last person to have any prejudices. I called him a redneck to emphasize the difference in interests we share.

This thread isn't about rednecks, it's about understanding how people connect with eachother and what relevance subject matter actually holds in a conversation.

Interesting statement. How about "I'm the last person to have any prejudices. I called him a nigger to emphasize the difference in interests we share". This would be seen as a culturally prejudiced statement, so why is your statement not.

The term redneck is an important one. It signifies a wall between you and that person. This is the answer you seek. Don't mistake my observation for criticism. I am pointing a direction.

I can see why you thought that Hue.

I live in the rural south and the term redneck does not have any negative connotation to it. Rednecks call eachother rednecks, black people call white people rednecks, it's just a word we use to describe a good ol boy. Nothing bad is meant by it.

Nigger to me definitely sounds dirty though. I wouldn't call someone a nigger unless he actually was my nigger.

Jeff Foxworthy made a career out of calling rednecks rednecks.
They are the ones that sell out those shitty shows.

Oh bullshit. I too live among rural southern people. Redneck is a derogatory cultural term.

"Rednecks call eachother rednecks"
Black people call each other niggers...so? You go into a rural black area and say "You niggers" to one of the black people, and you'll know it in a second. Tell the guy who invited you fishing that you don't share his redneck pursuits, and I am sure he would let you know. Ultimately when we build walls we are not enriched by them by them. They are the result of fear. Here is a book that addresses this very matter...prejudices that are so ingrained to our language and culture that we are blind to them.

It doesn't matter. He is from that culture and catering to it. Black comedians often say "nigger", but you call them one and see what happens.

I feel so sentenced by your words,
I feel so judged and sent away,
Before I go I’ve got to know
Is that what you mean to say?

Before I rise to my defense,
Before I speak in hurt or fear,
Before I build that wall of words,
Tell me, did I really hear?

Words are windows, or they’re walls,
They sentence us, or set us free.
When I speak and when I hear,
Let the love light shine through me.
