Yes, genius takes many forms not just philosophy and science but humor, sports, music, literature, mechanical aptitude, etc. Let's not get too full of ourselves here, many people look at philosophy as just so much bullshit...

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

OTD used to be civil and pretty thought engaging, but I thinked it just turned extremely weird with lots of crazy posts. You'll get flamed if you post anything that requires a serious answer that requires any thought. Its been a while since i went to that forum, i pretty much only go on this one.

This reminds me of one of the coolest shroomerites I ever met, his name was Hatta, he hung out in this forum exclusively, i wonder where he is...

People that are of the opinion that philosophy is just so much bullshit are narrow-minded idiots.

Philosophically I humbly can't agree w/ your answer. Metaphorically speaking, is there really an intellectual surface? Even the great philosophers struggled w/ the value or (?measurement?) of philosophy and its studies.

What I like about philosophy is that a base needs to be drawn from, but defining this base is theoretically impossible b/c there's no knowing what the base actually is. Speaking of above, we'd have to look at the matter more inquisitively, define terms and definitions, debate those for a while, then see where we arrive. Unless of course, you've already done this...or maybe you can direct me to the teacher who has...cuz I'd be very interested.

Personally, I agree very much w/ everything you said!!! I like Philosophy, but the actual study of it convolutes almost all personal thought and expression that we make in the real world.

Nice post.

And of course I have done that. That is why I value philosophy as I do. Many people think philosophy is a bunch of old guys smoking pipes and talking about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. They do not understand what philosophy is and so cannot have an intelligent opinion on it.

Perhaps, but when their limited exposure to it consists of such ideas as,
"If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to hear it does it make a sound?"
or

Many people see such musings as nothing but mental masturbation totally out of touch with the real world (aka: "bullshit"). You and I both know that there is more to philosophy than this, however such things give it a reputation of being a useless pursuit engaged in by people with their heads in the clouds, usually pointy headed academics who really don't work for a living like the rest of us.
