Mystery Psilocybe... pics

I found these years ago and still I'm not sure what species they are.



Worst of all, I lost the spore prints and the site was destroyed the following year. I still have a dried specimen but it's over 12 years old now.

The specimens showed a slight bluing reaction at the stem base and in the flesh of the cap. The spore print was dark purple-brown. Minute whitish fibrils adorned the stem base. The cap pellicle was gelatinous and separable. Please ask if you require more information.

Are you positive there was blueing. They sort of look like one of the inactive Psilocybe species.

Interesting nonetheless. Someone else will be able to help you more.

Yeah, I am leaning towards the Psilocybe(Stropharia) caerulea/ aeruginosa group myself.

Absolutely positive about the bluing, Landsnorkler. I seen it wiv my own eyes, guvnor! It was quite minimal and doesn't really show up on the online pics. The scanning washed it out, but on the original photochemical emulsion prints (how quaint!) it's just possible to see it.

Would love to have assessed it for activity but:

1) I don't eat unidentified mushrooms!

2) It seemed more important to preserve the specimens in the name of science.

There was no sign of any blue slime like with Psilocybe(Stropharia) caerulea/ aeruginosa. The stems did not resemble aStropharia of that group either. To be honest I think it looks a bit like a P. liniformans but the cap context is very fleshy...?

I'll post my field notes in a few minutes - I'll have to type them up first.

OK, here's the description:

Habit/Habitat: Scrubby patch, on moss covered, sandy soil, woody debris apparent in area but also close (10m, beyond a fence) to a farmyard with pigs and chickens. Grass tussocks, dog rose, thistle and hawthorn all in immediate area. Mixed woodland also within 20m. Unfortunately this particular location was destroyed the following year during water main reconstruction.

Four specimens were found, totalling 10 grams fresh weight. Two were conjoined at the base, the remaining two were very close by = gregarious to caespitose but insufficient sample size. Specimens were frozen as there was freezing fog at the time of collection. They revived largely unharmed and produced spore deposits. These have unfortunately been lost.

Description
Pileus: 25 - 40 x 5 - 10 mm. Convex to obtusely conic at first, then flattening, with margin uplifting and becoming slightly undulate. +/- Broadly umbonate. Hygrophanous with a translucent striate margin and a separable gelatinous pellicle. Mid to dark greyish brown, drying pale yellowish to cream but remaining darker towards centre. Margins bruise slightly bluish. Flesh white to cream, bruising bluish especially in middle of cap.

Gills: Adnate to subdecurrent, pale pinkish brown, becoming darker brown. Close to subdistant, fairly broad.

Stipe: 45 – 65 x 4 – 6 mm. Largely equal but somewhat swollen at the base. Curved but not flexulose; stiff but not pliant. Pale yellowish cream, readily bruising faint blue to blue-green. Surface silky, covered with fine whitish fibrils. White rhizomorphs protruding from base. Faint annular zone near apex, suggesting cortinate partial veil. Hollow throughout, 1 – 2 mm, with somewhat fibrous context.

Spores: Purple-brown in deposit. Approx. 8 -10 um(?), subellipsoid – pyriform. (Possibly with oil droplet?)

Additional notes: Attempts six and a half years later to produce a culture from the gills of the dried specimens were unsuccessful. Further microscopy is necessary to confirm the identity of these specimens.
