Hello Shroomers,

Today we found two Pan casters in a very small park,
In the grass of course. And the fungi's were positioned
At the base of a statue of children dancing and playing,
Two casters caps wading against the dull of the grass.
Amoungst the children's feet, amoungst the grass,
And amoungst the Shrooms and the sunshine.
-Unfortunately i didn't have my camera with me,
But i did bring the two Shroomies home for a pic.

2 specimens of Panaeolus castaneifolius
-from a new location, new collection site

hey greatone, i see those look a lot like casteneifolius. i live down here too and i would like to know if there are any specific types of grassy areas that this mushroom grows in. all i can find online and in book is that it grows in grassy areas. not much info on it.

i believe to have found P. casteneifolius about 2 months ago in a cow field in manatee county. according to my memory, hehe, these mushrooms did not turn blue and were not P. papilionaceus. i did not have time to id them properly and i did not consume them because of this. i only took cop cyans and cubes with me. but i am 95% sure they were casters because they were not growing directly on the dung and did not turn blue. very similar to your picture.

the species interests me a lot so if you have some habitat experience with them please help me out

Panaeolus castaneifolius grows in grass. Well-maintained grass for the most part, but i have also found them growing in a humus-type of mixture in the grass. This mushroom has no relationship to the trees and it has no relationship to manure; it grows in residential and also commercial areas, most common on lawns with sprinkler systems; i have found them in lawns at parks, and along roadside meadians, more frequently found in nice residential communities where rich and retired people live, always in grass; the nice bahia grasses and planted as sod.

There is one look-alike that i know of in these lawns, (besides Panaeolina foenesecii of which i swear up and down i have never found in Florida)
And that look-a-like is the non-active Panaeolus campanulatus var. sphinctrinus
-And the later mushroom is not always very common to find in lawns, but it is prolific in pasturelands and manure.

Good luck,
Keep shroomin,
GG
