Advisers defy Brown on upgrading cannabis

The Government's drugs policy was thrown into confusion today after its own advisers said cannabis should remain a Class C drug.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has defied Gordon Brown and concluded there is no case for reclassification.

Only two days ago, the Prime Minister said he wanted to send a signal to teenagers that the drug was not only "illegal but it is unacceptable".

But the advisory council agreed at a private meeting yesterday that there is no case for removing cannabis from the same class as temazepam and Valium.

Mr Brown is left with the option of taking the expert advice of the council or pressing ahead with plans to return cannabis to a Class B drug.

In response to the report, Home Secretary-Jacqui Smith said she still believed cannabis use was "serious".

She said: "I haven't seen the report, I don't know what it says. It was right we asked the Advisory Committee whether or not we have the classification right. I also think it is right that I see the detail of what they have said before I comment on it."

She added: "I do believe cannabis use is serious which is why it is illegal and it is already classified as illegal."

If the Government does reclassify, it will be the first time ministers have rejected the findings of the 23 members of the Advisory Council.

The council, chaired by Sir Michael Rawlins, is reported to have been swayed by evidence from Keele University which found nothing to support the theory that rising cannabis use led to increases in the incidence of schizophrenia.

Its guidance is consistent with previous recommendations in 2002 and 2006 which also said cannabis should remain in the Class C bracket.

Government policy has swayed widely over the past decade. Cannabis was downgraded to a Class C drug in 2004 by then Home Secretary David Blunkett in the face of opposition from mental health experts.

A year later, Charles Clarke moved to upgrade it but backed down after the 2006 review by the Advisory Council concluded there was no case for change.

But Mr Brown made clear in one of his first acts as Prime Minister that he wanted to see it reclassified in a higher band. At his monthly press conference on Tuesday, he said stronger skunk cannabis makes use of the drug much more serious.

But he added: "I will take the advice obviously, as will the Government as a whole, from the advisory committee and we will look at what they say."

Senior police officers, magistrates and mental health groups have all called for tougher penalties for cannabis use. And the Government's drugs advice website FRANK warns of "increasing evidence of a link between cannabis and mental health problems such as schizophrenia".

I'd like to read more about that study, the first time I heard about this schizophrenia nonsense I figured it would be common sense to look at the rising levels of cannabis use over the years and then see no significant change in the rates of schizophrenia incidence, leading one to conclude that perhaps while people who may become schizo in their lifetime are more attracted to smoking weed, there is absolutely no evidence of this "superskunkz make you craaaaazy" bullshit.

I have read the report on cannabis causing schizo.

It stated that some 40% or more of users will develop mild to moderate Schitzo.

Yet the use of cannabis has more or less gone up, and Schhito cases have remained the same.

But the survey i REALLY want to see, is how many schitzos actually used cannabis before the symtoms developed.

Were they born with it? Is there a family history? Was it after one j, or 35+ yrs of daily habbit?? Did it happen at all, after 35+ yrs of smoking?

Until then, the 40% risk is just a tool for them to use to spread propaganda and fearmonger votes.

I think it was saying something slightly different, but the wonderful tabloid rags of the United Kingdom spun it completely different.

Daily Mail

Now, what that article said is that using cannabis raises the RISK of developing mental illness by 40%. Now, that number sounds scary, and, as most people have little background in statistical analysis, it is easy for the average person to see that stat and freak out about how everyone who smokes weed will go insane. However, that 40% is the INCREASE in risk. Since the actual risk for developing schizo is a little less than 1%, a 40% INCREASE from that would leave us with about a 1.4% chance, which is nowhere nearly as scary as the sensationalist rags would have you believe. The vast, VAST majority of people who ever use cannabis will experience no adverse effects, and to the extreme minority who do, well, that's the same risk as eating nuts or getting stung by a bee, and to suggest the prohibition of these to protect that minority is ridiculous.

Which is why it is serious because it is bad which is why it is illegal because I believe that it is illegal, serious, and bad, so therefore it is bad and illegal and serious.

Sounds solid to me

So weed is 40% more risky if you smoke it as opposed to stuffing it in a tennis ball and playing catch with it? Well damn. I'll just keep that in mind next time I have a quarter. Oh the fun you can have with cannabis!

I want to know how many "schitzos" drank tap water before symptoms developed. I'm pretty certain all of them did. I'm certain that it is that tap water, not cannabis, that causes people to go "schitzos". (sarcasm)

I cannot believe how idiotic these people are. It truly astounds me that they are trying to call canabis a hard drug that creates mental illness left and right and is a billion times stronger than it used to be.

Don't these guys have any contact with real life and actual people?
