sociology is a joke

I wish I never took this class
stupid humanities requirements
It all seems like a bunch of speculation and really nothing to contribute except for how things are and proposes no real change
how the hell am I supposed to produce 12-16 pages by the end of tonight that is on a 3 page article?

Worst. Class. Ever.

I think its funny how they try to justify it as a science, yet it revolves around social justice and morality.  Science is amoral, sociology is not. 

Maybe one day they will clean up their discipline and make it legitimate.  It could be done.  They need a Harry Seldon or something...  :rocket:

oh btw, I know I already thanked you but deffinitly wanted to let you know that I took your advice on the subject of questioning my major in hand when planning out my classes for fall 08
so :thumbup:
basically taking what I want and find interesting, and once I'm done with the semester I'm deciding between physics and biology.
I am personally thinking about a major in one and minor in the other, but that will set me back even further

indeed its extremely easy
I got a 98% on the last test
I guess different strokes for different folks
I prefer anthro to sociology
my sis is an anthro major, envious of all the travels she is doing/ going to be doing

anthropology can and does cross over into many other disciplines quite often. Especially the more 'hard' sciences. ethnobotany or ethnopharmocology for example. My main focus is anthropology, and the only reason I am a double major is becuase it is recommended. I chose sociology for three reasons. First, it is close to anthropology in the sense I am a cultural anthropologist. Two, transferring into this university I had a fair amount of soc credits. The last reason though is that if I don't wind up in graduate school like I hope a sociology degree is supposed to me more marketable.

yea I think if you really want to do something decent with an anthro career grad school is kind of a must

So is the original poster wrong? He just said it proposed no real change yet you claim it revolves around social justice.

And how is it not a science? Sociology makes good use of quantitative research and statistics to test social theory. Would you say that linear regression is worthless? It is one the most accurate and powerful social research methods.

Sociology is a broad subject. Don't knock it if you had some trouble in your 100 level class. You'll find everything from heavily biased academics to the most unbiased and professional studies in it. So what if someone is using sociology for social justice? How does that make it illegitimate? Does that make medicine illegitimate as well? Does that mean there are no researchers in it for the sake of hard data? Even the military has their own sociologists to research their recruiting trends. But I doubt they have any sense of morals or social justice in their work. Just like psychology, it isn't all shrinks and marketing people.

I'm a Political Science major, I've taken lots of anthro and soc classes. I have a lot of respect for social sciences, but god damn I get tired of sorting through a lot of useless crap to the good stuff. Even History, a humanity which is a little bit more substantive than the others can have a lot of B.S. I look forward to the end of my undergrad.

Fcuk... im taking this class now <required> the bitch teacher shows up 15 min late every day, doesnt return my emails and gave the mid term after missing the class before hand and had a substitute administer the test after giving us a random 3o min survey. :crankey:

any how, the first day of class she lectured on the differnence between quantitative and qualitative arguments and that she will be teaching sociology from a "quantitative" level of analysis. MY ASS. First, ALL of here examples are anicdotal, and second her lectures count for about 30 % of the matierial questioned on the test, therefore not even quantifying her own class...
