What's more productive, the basic mono tub, or a mini-greenhouse?
    #8204938 -

In terms of productivity which is more productive, a 29 gal mono tub or a mini green house?

Would 5 bulk trays be comprable to 5 mono tubs with the same surface area/depth?

Would using relatively small GH, big enough for 4-5 bulk trays be counter-productive compared to 4-5 monos?

Thanks for stopping by to share your experience.

I would say monotubs would be more productive, however you are placing more risk in monotubs because if you get contamination you are screwed. You get contaminants inside of a greenhouse you can isolate the infected casing and dispose of it with no harm done to the rest of your grow.

I will also say this, after 2 years of using the indoor greenhouse method I was pleased with my results. But now Im getting ready to try my first monotubs.

ive pondered this too. i was thinking more specifically a martha vs monotub. but there are so many areas to compare. amount of care (time invested), contams, output, costs, which is more easily hidden, etc

I don't mind spending $70-100 on a decent 5 tier gh, if it holds 5 big bulk trays and can produce it would ideally save time and money in the long run when it comes to contaminations, but not really any different than a mono right?

If a tray has the same surface area/depth as a mono, why would it matter if either one contamed, same outcome regardless, right?

My thing is, 5 mono's would take up more space than a 5 tier gh I would I think. Space is somewhat of an issue but it definetly seems easier to work out of trays... and I say this because..

If you have a 5 tier gh, load it up with your colonized trays for fruiting.. in the mean time have 5 more in incubation.. and repeat.

10- 29 gal tubs cost $11 each around here... plus time to drill holes, make plexiglass tops etc. That's over $115 in tubs alone, not counting the space required to house them.

I already have 10 unused bulk trays that are just as large as my 29 monos surface area for substrate.

I guess I've answered my own questions.

never used a green house (always wanted to)...the monotubs suites someone who just wants a massive flush all at once..if i were runnig a green house, it seems like it would be a constant process...... and in the long run i think the green house could produce much more because of that constant process. Anytime you bring in shelving its going to conserve space and allow you to produce much more.

although the monotubs or double tubs have a great feature

and that is ...that you don't have to open but maybe 2 to four times through out the whole process. which in my eyes is a great defense to contams
