this is the worst job i've ever had

I started working at a shitty cafe about a week ago, and it is without a doubt the worst job I've ever had. By far.

First, their food safety standards are beyond low... they put plastic wrap on things that go in the oven (so the plastic melts into the food) because it "saves tinfoil", they don't wash dishes (a rinse in tepid water is considered the best way to sanitize a cutting board that was recently used to cut raw chicken), and they use old meat scraps that have been sitting IN THE GARBAGE CAN for days.

If that wasn't enough to put me off, my boss is a cunt. In her words, I'm an idiot, I can't do anything right, I lied about my experience (not true, I did not exaggerate anything on my resume), I will never be as good at cooking as she is, I talk too much, I'm lazy, I'm disorganized, and I'm wasting her time and money. Today she yelled at me for cutting potatoes the wrong size. I asked her to please show me the correct way to cut them, since I obviously don't know it, so she cut a potato for me. I put that potato aside, finished cutting the potatoes, and then, showing her the potato that she had just cut, asked her if it was the right size now--and apparently it was WAY TOO BIG and I am WASTING HER MONEY.

Okaaaaay.... Nevermind the fact that I'm early every day, I bust my ass all day long to try to get as much done as well as possible, and I keep a pleasant/professional attitude at all times.

Other things she has gotten angry at me for in the past 3 days: buttering bread too slowly, using too much non-stick spray, using too little non-stick spray, asking too many questions, wiping the counter too often, making sandwiches too slowly ("it shouldn't take you more than 30 seconds to make a sandwich, and if it does you're wasting my customers' time!"), not taking a long enough break, not knowing where to put everything, cleaning the meat slicer too thoroughly, throwing out moldy tomatoes, and the possibility that I might at some point mess up the bread dough should she ever allow me to help her make it.

I honestly don't know how to deal with this. I've tried to have a good attitude, but it's difficult for me to try my best when I'm being constantly verbally abused. Last summer I was working 80+ hour weeks at two crappy jobs and I was absolutely miserable. I would go back to doing that in a heartbeat if I could, if only to avoid going to my current job another day.

They're barely paying me over minimum wage, and I wouldn't even have taken the job if I wasn't so desperate for money, so I guess I can't afford to be too picky, but I can't stand this place anymore. I would rather work at McDonalds or live on the street (or both) than work there.

I would totally be taking advantage of how much I hate it by stealing useful things and generally being a jerk, but there's nothing worth stealing, and everyone else who works there is really nice and they're obviously only there because they're desperate for work, too, so it wouldn't be fair for me to be nasty to them.

I like the "kill them with fire" idea. Maybe I'll just egg the place when I leave. And if I do end up going in tomorrow, I'm going to hide things all over the place. I'm talking frozen shrimp in the heat vents, raw eggs under the loose tiles sort of thing.:evil:

mayfly, work there until you find a new job. you should make some flyers up describing what goes on back in the kitchen, take some pictures if you can, and pass a flyer out to every one eating there on your last day. hell go back and pass them out after you quit, to people as they are walking in the place :smile:

DO NOT GET INTO DEBT!!

That means bend like the bamboo, keep working there until you find a job as soon as possible.

Don't end up in between jobs, you might get stuck there.

Your boss is an abusive cunt. Fact.
You need continuous employment to generate income. Fact.

Just work there until you find another job as soon as possible, and once you transition into the other job call the health inspection or whatever organization raids unsanitary places.

You can save many people from foodpoisoning and have a kickass last day at work when health inspectors show up and put that b*tch on the spot :cool:

Wow, being in the industry for a few years now I've heard of places like that (minus the blatant mishandling of food :scat:), but I've been fortunate enough to land decent paying jobs with good bosses and nice co-workers. I agree with the others who say that you should find another job before quitting this one if the money thing is a big issue, and call the health inspector(s) at some point for sure.

man, i feel sorry for you. It sounds exactly like my old job. except mine was in a gourmet chicken shop.

i ended up leaving just before christmas, which is the busiest time of year for them, but i did stick it out for two years.

find a new job man, and then just fuckin walk out. (and call the health department)

keep the job and call the health dept. when they come for the surprise inspection, show them all the stuff she is trying to hide from them, then walk out when the inspector does.

Honestly, I was in a similar situation. I walked out in the middle of a rush on a close shift, then on my way home I called the health dept. Long story short the place almost shut down due to the required improvements. And it felt good.
