it's always much cheaper to do it yourself.

when i had to replace my water pump, i went to a mechanic and he said the labor would be $300 and a USED water pump would be $30. i cant remember exactly, but i bought a brand NEW water pump for like $60(or maybe it was $30..cant remember) and then my stepdad put it on for me and it took him maybe 30 minutes.

definitely do smaller things yourself or have someone who knows what they are doing do it for you.

The only two parts that haven't been replaced on my car (at my expense) is the alternator and the power steering system.  That's leaking and I'm about to lose power steering. :smile:

Car problems, I'm on my fourth car... and It's got a new engine and transmission, and it's still got problems. :frown:

I needed part of my exhaust switched out due to rust. Went to a few places. Cheapest was 800$, we bought the pipe for 200 did it ourselves. saved 600 buckaroos.
