So what does it mean when your apartment smells like gas?
    #8121259 -

Not gasoline, but gas. I don't smell it until I leave and when I come I notice big time it reeks of gas. It started a last night maybe before that I don't know if it's worsened or what but I cant notice after I have been sitting in here a while, change the filter maybe it hasn't been changed in a year, they don't do it several times a year like they should just once.

natural gas or methane?

if it's natural gas, you need to get your hot water heater/fireplace/whatever checked out asap and don't light/start any heat sources.

if it smells like methane (human/animal gas) you might want to have your plumbing/sewage system checked out asap

i awoke in the middle of the morning once, in my old place, to what reeked of methane, and ignored it, cause i knew i hadn't taken a shit in my sleep or anything. woke up a few hours later to both of my bathtubs filled with sewage and human waste from where the tank connecting our apt. block had backed up and overflowed

I have no gas stove, only gas thing I have is the furnace. I feel fine and I noticed it last night, carbon monoxide is orderless, or so they say. The gas is the hallway is the strongest spot near the floor while a vent is. I shut the furnace off at the thermostat. it only smells when it runs.

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

But no really, don't. Go to sources of gas and see if it smells worse. Check the pipes under stoves, water heaters, heaters, etc. Anything that uses gas, check it out. If the smell gets worse, make some soapy water and coat the lines and connections in it. If you have a leak you will see bubbles. If thats the case, get the fuck out man.

I remember back when I lived in Atlanta there was this hardcore freeze (like -10F, hardcore for Atlanta) so a lot of people resorted to (gasp!) actually turning on their heat. There were about 2 or 3 houses that literally EXPLODED and people died. Don't fuck around with gas leaks.

If it smells worse when it runs then maybe your pilot light is out. Check that. If not it's probably a leak. Turn the gas off via a valve, if there is one. If not, don't stay there.

Natural gas is mostly methane.

Methane has no odor, however natural gas has some sulphur compounds added so you can smell it.

You should call the gas company immediately, they will track down the source.

Don't use any light switches or other things that cause sparks.

That same shit happened me to yesterday. It rained two day straight so I guess my septic couldn't drain properly and i woke up to shit in the bathtub. Fucking sucked.
