any of you got car troubles?
    #8122770 -

cars break or need parts constantly, its such a pain to go pay out the ass for someone to fix it, any of you fix your own?

my car needs new front control arms, new struts, boots, and G2 cartridges, not to mention my dash lights flicker on and off all the time (loose wire or fuse).

im planning to fix the struts and dash problems myself and just pay minimal to have the control arms put in.

the original cost would have been 1100$, and will only be 400$ if i do the struts and dash myself, it really pays off. what are some other easy fixes you guys do? obviously changing oil is a breeze.

i just recently picked up an oldskewl 36mpg toyota, so im totally stoked to see where that will lead my pocketbook. not to mention ill be going back to regular duty soon so ill be able to get mucho overtime again.

gas is rediculous!

anyone ever install their own heating coil in their diesel tanks and run bio?

i bought my 93 jeep cherokee about 4 years ago and all i've had to fix on it is the water pump, starter, and battery.  on friday, i paid $58 to fill my tank and that'll last me until next friday.  horrible, just horrible.

but i have a growing $5000 in the bank that's going to most likely go into another jeep.

I just got an 04 Toyota Corolla hopefully I won't have to fix anything on it for a long time, it's still under warranty right now. it only has 60,000 miles on it so it will last a long time. It's a great gas saver I can drive 150 miles still have half a tank, it's only a 10-12 gallon tank I believe.

Same here. I do a lot of car repair and after years of fucking with my car and my friend's cars, i realized that a $100 spent on your car commonly prevents $1000 problem that would've happened 6 months later.

any of you ever check out carcomplaints.com?

its good to know what kind of problems your specific car is having in that year and make, so you can keep an ear and eye on them and get them fixed before they get too bad.

theres some funny problems with cars recently too.

windows going up and down at random like their possessed, radios turning on at random, cruise control not being able to turn off - but thats ok you like going 65 constantly right?

and it seems to be chevy/GMC, fords, dodge, are all the major problem causers!

even the newer hondas have some issues!

its all about buying a Yoda (toyota) and keeping it together and changing the oil often. even if the engine shits out u can get one imported with 30k miles for like 400$.

the only bad yoda out there is the rav4, fuck those pieces of shit.

what are some easy fixes for a mechanic newbie?
i hate dealing with mechanics, most of them out there scam you for shit that u dont need.
i know a few tricks with cars.

- if u ever get a new radiator at a auto shop, ask to keep your old one, aluminum ones are worth about 80-120$ in scrap aluminum, and the copper ones worth about 200-300$. usually it pays off to recycle them, as you get back about 90% of what u payed for the new one.

- catalytic converters! find a dismantling or scrapping yard that recycles metals like these, ask to trade in your dead one for one from their pile, they are usually operational, working or not does not matter, its the metals in them they want.

I just checked my car on that site. It shows the same problem that I'm having, and the same mileage. Weird...

these look like they are problems that are to a persons specific vehicle rather than in general...at least the ones im looking at.

1 thing for my jeep...by one person..."idles rough then stalls."

i dont have that problem and i drove through the millage that was listed.

I finally found a mechanic I truly trust a couple years ago but even still, repairs can get real expensive real quick

I ride a motorcycle as much of the year as possible, so every fall I buy a $400 or $500 POS to get me through the winter

layyouin, its not exactly the problem with every single one made, but these are common problems, meaning they happen often wit hthat year and make. doesnt mean they will for everyone.

i checked out a lot of my families cars on there and the problems were all the same ones weve always had with them so i thought it to be pretty legit.

darkstar, ever consider asking for a free estimate to your problem, then researching how to fix some of whats wrong? my friend had a honda hatchback that was running on 3 cylinders, the shop wanted 350$ to fix spark plug wires and some sealing rings for compression, he spent about 125$ and did it himself in a few hours!
and hey how many MPG do u get on that cycle? was the license for a motorcycle hard to get? what did u have to do to get it?

rm420, you should make a craigslist post for someone to help or teach you, you could probably get the new parts and pay for someone to teach u how to replace the heads, and cheaper than paying for a mechanic to do it - after all labor is where the money comes from and unlicensed mechanics charge less and usually know just as much. i know quite a few people who repair their own cars/trucks and do some side work like this and they said fixing blown heads are easier than you would think.

i used to look at my engine and go "damn thats a lot of criss-cross this and that", i can now start the car, rev it up, and do many other things just under the hood.

wish i knew a lot more though, and i was wondering if anyone was interested in teaching, linking to, or at least mentioning, some easy car fixes that a newbie could do at home. anyone ever use youtube for tutorial videos or know of any place online that has car repair tutorial videos?

but the problems i saw, only had one person reporting each one. i was expecting to see like 20 people that had the same exact problem...

the corolla has consistently been one of the best cars on
the market for probably 30 years, if you do the regular
maintenance and dont try beating it to death it's not
uncommon to get 500k miles from the engine, I know a man
with a mercedes that has over a million miles on it, it
looks like fidos ass but it's still running

I do my own simple work... oil changes, headlights, plugs, wires, etc. And I have a couple friends that will help me with more in-depth work if I ask but I'm happy to have found a good mechanic who is truthful about what's urgent, what can wait, and what can be done with used parts.

My bike has an 800 cc engine and gets about 50 MPG on the highway. I got my bike license when I lived in Ontario, Canada and there was an easy written test and then a test on a fake road setup behind the licensing office.

I don't have a pic of my bike but it's the same as this one:
