A PARTINGTON GP has joined calls to reclassify cannabis over fears about its long-term health risks.

Dr Hans-Christian Raabe says he sees the effects of the class C drug regularly when patients walk into his practice, the Central Surgery on Central Road.

He is supporting a probe led by Graham Brady, the MP for Altrincham and Sale West, into the dangers of using cannabis.

Dr Raabe said: "What I see in my practice is a large number of people in their late teens, early 20s and especially men who become out of control when they use cannabis.

"Cannabis use poses problems in itself but then they move on to harder drugs such as genetically modified skunk.

"The strength of the drug has also increased significantly.

"I believe the Government was completely wrong when it downgraded cannabis from a class B to a class-C drug."

He says the drug can lead to a range of mental health problems, ranging from depression to schizophrenia. Often, users will lack the motivation to even lead normal lives, adds Dr Raabe.

"I sometimes see young men who find it difficult to concentrate and are struggling at either university or at work.

"They often have difficulty sleeping and become isolated from their friends."

Despite claims that cannabis is not addictive, Dr Raabe says some patients show signs of dependency on the drug.

He added that users can seek help and advice via the organisation Clear Head by logging on to www.clearhead.org.uk. Dr Raabe’s damning verdict on the drug comes as Graham Brady makes strides as chairman of a cross-party parliamentary committee.

Mr Brady recently criticised the inadequacy of the government’s drugs strategy in the House of Commons, adding that its Talk to Frank campaign suggests that only teenagers with existing mental health problems should avoid it.

Labour politicians have agreed to look into his concerns.

Speaking later, Mr Brady said: "I am very concerned that the information available to young people does not do enough to warn them about the real dangers of smoking cannabis.

"The evidence is that cannabis can trigger serious mental health problems such as schizophrenia.

"Issuing a warning to those who already have mental health problems is simply not good enough and is putting young people in danger.

"I am glad that a minister has promised to look into the matter.

"I sincerely hope that he does and that he acts quickly to strengthen the warning."

heroin is actually a pretty safe drug..... its just notoriously impure... and highly addictive.... i would say tobacco and alcohol are the real killers of all societies.

Geez, I might have so many mental illnesses that it has made me come to the conclusion that I'm really SANE!!!!! OH NOES THIS GUY IS RIGHT, I'M RETARDED! LMAO.... I sleep just fine, when I'm high OR SOBER. I'm never out of control and infact, people always tell me I'm extremely mature acting for my age. Responsible? Not really, I like to live freely, but I do what I need to do to keep food on the table and my family safe. Now what if I were an alcoholic? I would bet MONEY that I would be very different or opposite what and who I am now. I would be much worse off drinking alcohol than smoking cannabis two times a day.

So, if weed is stronger then I don't have to smoke as much to get high, thus reducing the amount of plant material I have to burn and inhale. Stronger pot is safer pot. Get it right.
