Excited! Learning Glass Blowing.
    #8100302 -

I haven't started yet, but I'm excited! I have been looking into glass blowing for a long time, i have always wanted to learn but never met someone to apprentice me that is available.

Today at work i started up a conversation with one of the guys about glass blowing. I was going on and on about it, then i mentioned that i really wanted to find someone to teach me. He told me that he was a glass blower, then took me out to his car and showed me some of his samples that he had in his trunk.

I was stunned that i knew this guy that long and never knew. I guess he has been all over talking with head shop owners, so he had them with him. He is no novice, his pieces were so sweet.
Anyways: He told me that if i was that interested, that i should come by his shop tomorrow and check it out. If i was really serious, that he would teach me! I'm so happy!

Is there anyone out there who does glass blowing? I know I'm going over to his shop tomorrow, but id like to know how much others may have paid someone to teach them. I have researched actual glass blowing school prices, but have no clue what to expect. We know each other pretty well, but I'm not expecting him to give me a friend price. Has anyone out there taken lessons before?

Awesome Lord of Chaos! I've always wanted to learn to blow glass as well. I envy you.

And beebop, you've got my old avatar! (Or part of it anyways)

I took a week long course way back when, and I would definitely not be able to tell you how much it cost me. It was awesome though, and I definitely have an itching to go back and blow some more.

My instructor said that glassblowers are like a moth to a flame, addicted to the heat, and I would have to agree. I itch to get back in front of those big ass ovens and blow some molten glass.

thats great- from what i know of it, it is a very strenuous artform, but incredibly satisfying. Blown glass looks otherworldly....And if you get into a good guild, very lucrative.

good for you.:headbang:

I talked to the guy again. He is going to charge me 350 bucks for 18 hours of class time, and that includes supplies. Normally it is alot more, so i am lucky to find this guy. After my traing, he is going to rent me out shop time until i get one of my own going. While i am renting out time, he said he will coach me for free while he is there watching me.
He also told me that he is a part of forming the areas first guild, so i guess i really lucked out.

glass blowing is alot of fun, but to be honest youre going to need a lot more than 18 hours time untill you get very far along. i started blowing 3 or 4 years ago, just bought all the shit and started off on my own.

you can usually get an operation like that off of the ground for about a grand .

best of luck on your blowing, and post some pics when you can!

I been spinnin on and off for the past five years now. First couple years were just getting interested. 2 years ago I started buying supplies. 2 years later, I'm just getting good. It's a slow expensive road. I got 4 grand invested in tools and almost 2 g's in glass.

I make most of my money making pendants, rings, earrings, and beads.

It doesn't take a lot of glass and time to make money. I can make a cool ring in 7 minutes and can sell them from 5 to 10 dollars each for a simple one. So I can make 40 an hour selling whole sale or I can make 80 an hour going out and hustling them on my own.

Beads and pendants very in prices, depending on the time and detail.

Pipes and marbles are fun, but they take a lot of gas, and energy to produce. I only rock big stuff for the first two days on every tank of o2. Just cuz i like to stretch it out and so I don't go through a tank every 3 days, I can stretch it out for almost 2 weeks using the smaller flames.

I wish I had a Dewars of LOX... Then i wouldn't have to drive 45 minutes and pay 85 bucks for two tanks of o2. Instead I'd pay 250 every 2 or 3 weeks, But thats a lot more gas and no driving. A must if you wanna go full time and go big a LOT. See Lox has around 18 k tanks of gas. So 250 divided by 18 gives you something like 13 dollars a tank. When i buy gas by the tank I pay almost 45

All costs and figures aside it's a blast!

Have fun!

Sweet man!

The guy teaching me buys liquid o2. It is like 15 tanks of gas, but the price of just 3 of them. The big thing is the deposit he has to have for the tank itself tho, it's like 1800 bucks and he just uses a credit card for that.

I have some good ideas in my head. I make real hemp necklaces, and i have some sweet plans in cooperating that and glass. I used to sell the shit out of them at local craft fairs. I'm hoping on making more money on trinkets like yard ornaments and figures of animals rather than bowls and pipes. My friend mostly does bowls, bongs and pipes, so i will practice on those anyways.

I know what people going to craft shows are looking for, so I'm hoping to be a smash there. If anything, i know the guys at the local head shops, so at least i can do that if i wanted to.
