Alaska
    #8099284 -

Hey i was just wondering if anyone lived in alaska. If so how do you like it? Im thinking about making the move this summer. What towns should i check out? I had a blast working in sitka last summer, and just wondering how bearable the winter actually is?

it is a great place to visit, but not such a good place to live. The winters are just to long and harsh, and after a while it wears you out and makes you a little depressed. At least this was the case for me.

I moved here from Texas after wanting to live here since I was a kid. It is like a never ending vacation...
The summer is well worth the winter, and the winter is cool if you snowboard, ski or snowmachine!! When it snows its warm, or atleast feels warm.

The summer hiking is insane! I love it and addicted to it.

If you live in AK hit me up, I need some contacts cuz I'm new here!!!

"Hey yo, you know they got tha dro' out in Wasilla... heeeee yeeeee yeeeee" WASILLA, WASILLA, WASILLA,...

Snowman,

This thread has got me interested in Alaska. Tell me some more about it? Isn't Juno the biggest city, what is it like?

What are the people like?

Are there a lot of forests?

Juneau is not the biggest city, i believe Ankroage is. Juneau is awesome completely surrounded by mountains, water, glaicers, and trees. Juneau is also the only capital city in the us that has no roads going into it. My favorite place was Sitka, the capital city when it belonged to Russia. I havent ventured up northern AK. I spent last summer as a pastry chef on a small cruise chef that took 7 day trips from ketchikan to juneau. It is the last frontier.. although a downside is the 8 dollar packs of smokes.

oh and fun fact: juneau is a temperate rain forest.

Anchorage has only around 30K ppl and its the biggest city here w/ more population then the rest of the state. Mountains surround my city, there is a 26 mile long glacier only 30 mins away from Anchorage... there is so many trails that people hike, even 5 day hikes. There is longer ones I've heard of.

Moose are everywhere, Bald Eagles sometimes fly into anchorage but it only takes a 10 min drive to see them. Mountain Goats 10 mins down the Seward highway...
Not really any insects except mosquitos, and those aren't even bad unless your out by a swampy marshy area.

I'll post some pics of some small hikes we have done!

I had a friend that stayed in Alaska for a while. She says that wen you see Mt. McKinley in person, it really puts into perspective how small we are.

Anyone have any experience with Fairbanks or Anchorage? From what I've googled, Anchorage seems to have a high crime rate which is not what I would expect.

Does all that cold weather prompt people to steal thermos' and mukluks?

Can't forget that they pay you 1000-2000 bucks a year for every year that you live up there. My friend just got his $1600 check in the mail the other day.

Superman is correct. You do get paid over $1000 a year to live up here from the Oil dividends.

And yes the crime rate isn't so great up here in Anchorage... there are alot of natives (eskimo ppl) who come into town from far away villages to steal and beg for money so they can get there alcohol.

The only cool thing about the natives is....
During mushroom season they send there women out with bags to pick thru the forest for Amanitas. I was actually out last year picking them and they kept taking all the good ones. Massive amounts...
I think I'm gonna ask if I can take pictures of them this year & ask how they prepare and use in ceremony. I think it would be a cool comparison of how they used to pick and use in ceremony in Siberia to now in Alaska.

I think the crime rate also has to do with there are more guns up here then people. Guns outnumber people 5-1 up here easily.

You just gotta know where to stay away from and where to watch your back. Its only like this in Anchorage, not the other cities. Its just like any other major city in any other state. You just hear more about it because there is less people, so any news is big news.

Probably why people live 30 mins away and only come into town when its needed. I want to eventually do this...
