This Jitterbug Perfume moment brought to you by Tom Robbins...

"If desire causes suffering, it may be because we do not desire wisely, or that we are inexpert at obtaining what we desire. Instead of hiding our heads in a prayer cloth and building walls against temptation, why not get better at fulfilling desire? Salvation is for the feeble, that's what I think. I don't want salvation. I want life, all of life, the miserable as well as the superb. If the gods would tax ecstasy, then I shall pay; however, I shall protest their taxes at each opportunity, and if Woden or Shiva or Buddha or that Christian fellow - what's his name? - can't respect that, then I'll accept their wrath. At least I will have tasted the banquet that they have spread before me on this rich round planet rather than recoiling from it like a toothless bunny. I cannot believe that the most delicious things were placed here merely to test us, to tempt us, to make it the more difficult for us to capture the grand prize: the safety of the void. To fashion of life such a petty game is unworthy of both men ands gods.

The lamas declare that they have no fear of death, yet is it anything less than fear that causes them to die before they die? In order to tame death, they refuse to completely enjoy life. In rejecting complete enjoyment, they are half-dead in advance - and that with no guarantee that their sacrifice will actually benefit them when all is done. They are good fellows, and I must respect their choice, but fullness, completion, not empty perfection, is this fool's choice."

Badass. Tom Robbins is a real cool guy. I'm still reading Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (being pokey and smoking too much instead of reading, but I'll finish it soon!). I've been re-writing and highlighting sentences that really hit hard, which I've never really done with a novel.

His books are almost maddening in that regard because when a line really hits me, I copy it word by word into my own journal. I like writing sentences that I like reading, if that makes sense. I read somewhere that Hunter S. Thompson sat down once and wrote The Sun Also Rises on his typewriter, opened the book in front of him and just copied it down page for page, just so he would know what it felt like to write that story.

Anyway, I go to write down lines from Tom Robbins every three pages, at least, it's ridiculous. This is my third time through Jitterbug Perfume and it's absolutely one of my favorite books of all time.

I understand about writing what you enjoy reading. I'm not sure I'd take it to the level Thompson apparently did, but I've definitely written out full pages of The Power of Myth and hung them on my wall, as reminders for myself and points of interest for guests. =]

I was reading his "Wild Ducks Flying Backwards" compilation of his articles and short pieces the other day. It's brilliant.

It's got some of his poetry in it which is just beautiful.

OMR, have you read his article on redheads? It's just so damn sexy and hilarious.

Quote:
Tom has finished writing his latest book. Here's a preview: Gracie Goes to Schooner School. It's now in the hands of the editors. We'll keep you informed of the progress. Update: Tom's novel will be published in the Fall as "B is for Beer". It is described as ""hallucinogenic hymn to beer, children, and the cosmic mysteries that sustain us all." Details here. (Thanks Mary!)

Quote:
According to HarperCollins executive editor David Hirshey, who is editing the book, it is about 100 pages long, and takes the form of a "hallucinogenic hymn to beer, children, and the cosmic mysteries that sustain us all."

Mr. Robbins, author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, has not written a novel since 2003's Villa Incognito, and B is for Beer will be his first since leaving Bantam Books, his publisher of almost 30 years.

Mr. Hirshey worked closely with Mr. Robbins as his editor at Esquire from 1985 until 1995, but had fallen out of touch with him in recent years. In fact, Mr. Hirshey said, he had not spoken to Mr. Robbins in a decade and had not been able to track down his contact information, when he got a phone call from him out of the blue about a week before Christmas.

"He calls up and tells me that he's left Bantam Books and he has something that he thought I might enjoy reading," Mr. Hirshey said. 'And then he says, 'Do you know anybody at Ecco? Two of my greatest heroes are Leonard Cohen and Charles Bukowski and I know that they're both published by Ecco. It would make me really happy to be part of that pantheon.'"

Mr. Hirshey called Ecco editor-in-chief Daniel Halpern and told him about the book, and Mr. Halpern agreed immediately to publish it.
