I'm Addicted To Xanax...
    #8071949 -

*I made this anonymous because I am friends irl with a few of the posters on here.

I don't know the hell this happened. I'm usually the one telling others to slow down and watch themselves, but somehow I ended up getting addicted to xanax. This crept up on me so insidiously too.

In the beginning I would take 1mg about once a week to help me fall asleep, but due to the stresses of school and work it gradually became a twice a week deal. A few months later, I was taking it about everynight to help me fall asleep because I found I could no longer fall asleep without it. All of a sudden, 1mg wasn't cutting it anymore, I had to take 2mg to fall asleep. Couple the fact that I was taking 2mg everynight plus taking 1 or 2mg during the day to counter anxiety attacks, I guess that is enough to create an addiction.

I wasn't even aware I was addicted, I was just taking the stuff to help me get through the day. Last week I stopped taking it for a couple days because I realized that this probably wasn't healthy for me and on the second day I noticed I was becoming slightly schizophrenic. This freaked me the fuck out, I didn't think it was the xanax, I thought I was going crazy actually, I was paranoid, having irrational thoughts and completely out of touch with reality. I looked up withdrawal symptoms and it matched to a t what I was going through.

So, here I am, addicted to xanax and I have no idea how to stop. I tried cutting back to 1mg a few days to wean myself off, but found myself not sleeping for 3 nights continuously which seriously interfers with school and work.

I don't know how I am going to get off this stuff. I can't afford not sleeping a few days because of work and school and going cold turkey makes me schizo. This stuff is evil...

it sucks you becames addicted to xanax. benzos can be hell to get off of but just quitting cold turkey is dangerous... i suggest you continue to ween yourself off slowly by lowering the dosage.

I suggest you try and do some research into Xanax some more and see if there is any ethnobotanicals that can help with your situation. I would help, but I never had an addiction to Xanax so I have never researched it for myself.

Tapper off in order to minimize withdrawals. Don't go cold turkey, the withdrawals can be deadly.

I know it sounds/feel bad but you are in good shape right now, honest. As long as you aren't waking up at 4a.m. in a pool of sweat you will be fine.

I was in a similar position years ago. Don't go cold turkey whatever you do. What I did was I made a schedule of when I dosed. I did everything the same for 2 or 3 days making note of when I popped one.

The day after that I scheduled to take the same amount-.. but an hour later. For example if I took one at 12:00p.m. and then one at 4:00pm and then the last at 10:00pm. the next day I would take the first at 1:00pm, 5:00pm, then 11:00pm. After a few days you will notice that you will be asleep by the time you are supposed to take the last. That's what we're trying to do. Move the dosing back just like that unless you start to get uncomfortable or get the shivers. If you keep twitching and shaking or waking up in the night you need to cut the hour in half.

If you get real antsy smoke a bowl and wait till you dose again.
You will get through this, bro.

Could cannabis help you sleep at all?

if tappering off is difficult for you then maybe you should speak with the doctor who prescribed them to you.

i hope this works out for you because xanies are tough. they cause physical as emotional addictions...

you need to ween off them slowly. that doesnt mean going from 2mg to 1mg. you need to go from one week taking 1mg to one week taking .8 mg to one week taking .6mg etc.

that's the only way IMO

just don't be scared. it takes motivation more than anything. you have to not be afraid of coming off it. you have to look forward to it.

to the OP, I know this is compeltely off topic, but I am very serious when I ask you this question.

have you felt the urge to steal shit?

I have had three friends get up to a habit of about 3 xanibars a day (atleast) and every single one of them eventually stole from me, or one of their other friends.

not only that, I have heard stories from other people, or asked this question when it comes up, and it has overwhelmingly been "yes".

I wonder if a person fuxxz0red on xanax gets so used to not remembering things, that they figure they wont remember that they completely fucked their friends over, and somehow justify it that way.

so please answer honestly. im not asking if you have stole anything, but just, do you ever remember having the urge to steal something?

yawning,

i haven't felt an urge to steal in the slightest. i'm still the same person, i just get paranoid/out of my head when going through the withdrawals.

as for the pot, I would if I could, but I'm in a position where I can't do that right now.

weaning off of this stuff is my best option I suppose.

thanks for the replies

Wean yourself off and learn the lesson about staying away from "legal" drugs. They are only legal as instituted mind control by the government...don't succumb to this voluntarily. I got off of a 15 year alcohol addiction by weaning myself down...you can do the same.

Does anyone know at about what point you would need to worry about withdrawls? At the most i've taken on average 1 - 2mg a day for a little over a week, sometimes as much as 5mg but that was only a few times. Went a day or two without taking them and the only things I noticed after are the usual effects while on the stuff, short term memory getting worse and generally feeling almost sort of retarded... but not that bad. Spacey too, very easy to drift off. So not too bad compared to other drugs i've come out of. I just wonder for my and my friends wellbeing at about what point you need to worry about serious withdrawls?

I read somewhere that 4mg a day for at least 2 months is the standard for addiction.

2mg a day can still produce minor withdrawal symptoms, just nothing like what is encountered in the 4mg range though.

this site should give you all the information you need to safely withdraw. http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/. basically, all you have to do is work out a tapering schedule that works for you and you can get off xanax with minimal discomfort. if you're experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, it seems you're trying to drop the dosage too quickly. since you haven't been taking xanax that long, i doubt you've done any permanent damage to your nervous system, so you should be fine.

do you honestly believe that? drugs are legal/illegal largely for historical reasons, not as part of some conspiracy of mind control by the government. are you aware of the period call prohibition? the government TRIED to make alcohol illegal.

also, if the government was really trying to control peoples minds, why would they strictly control drugs like benzos and opiates? do you know how difficult it is for some people with severe chronic pain to get prescriptions for enough opiates to allow them to function? if the government really wanted to control peoples minds through drugs, why not simply legalize heroin? that would pacify a lot of people. the reason(s) certain drugs are legal and illegal are far more complex than you are suggesting. alcohol is a great example. its use is so ancient and it's so integrated into culture that its literally not possible for the government to make it illegal. but you can bet if alcohol were invented today, it would immediately be placed in schedule 1. it's legal for historical reasons, not because the government is trying to control peoples minds.
