Chicken manure
    #799684 - 08/06/02 09:00 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Looking through the faqs and such, I've seen people talk about using cow and horse manure, but what about chicken manure; ok or not?

I know that chicken manure is used in commercial mushroom production, but I am unsure if it's the primary constituent or an additive. Do some searching on the web. Google is my favorite, general search engine.

Peace

I am sure that it must work. The whole concept with shit is decomposed grains and vegetatvie material. chickens eat seeds right? as long as their diet isn't composed mainly of worms or some other proteins it should work. I imagine collecting enough chickem shits though would be a lot harder than collecting two or three large cow patties.

I assume that chickens eat primarily grains through their feed. I just don't know the specifics. Concerning collecting the manure, I have seen bags of chicken manure for sale at various places.

Btw, nice baobab pic in your avatar.

Chiken manure infact cant be used unless it's mixed with cow or horse manure! Something like 4parts cow manure to 1 part chiken manure.
Chcken manure is to high in nitrogen and it will burn up your mycellium.

I found a bag of compost that contained chicken poo, worm casings and bat guana at Lowes. I used it mixed 50/50 with vermiculite to case some brf jars. Worked great! Same flush size as my verm/peat moss casings but they fruited faster.

I would have to say that it can be used as a supplement to compost, but i would not recommend to use it alone.

Chicken manure is too acidic for mycelium production.
Take for example using chicken manure in your garden for your plants.
It can`t be used straight because you`ll start noticing a bruning effect on the tips of the leaves and eventual death of the plant if you don`t correct the imbalance.

Ultimately digested grains and the feed that chickens are given nowadays just isn`t the correct or most stable spwan to use.
Another thing being wether you`re using grain-fed or freerange chickens??
Ultimately if you are using chickens living 1000 per cage squashed together with their beaks cut off and a pipe down their throat, you aint going to get shit to grow of the negeative energy being pumped out.

Horses mostly run free and eat grass, atleast the horse I get poop from lives a great life, and it shows in the mushroom.

I agree, with psilocybinjunkie on the chicken manure being too high in nitrogen to be used by itself. But mixing it with other manures like horse and then a carb source like wheat straw makes for really nice compost. bluhoney

Thanks for all the input. Given what everyone's said, as well as my situation (my 'front yard' is a pasture with our horses in it - horse manure aquisition is *not* a problem), I think I'll just leave the chicken poop out for the time being...

I was going to try this but I bought a small bag of it and just set it in my room over night the next morning the smell was unbareable and this stuff was dry. I couldn't imagine the smell after it was wet.
